I had to smile at John Ciano’s post. Almost 20 years ago I opened for Poco in Bethlehem PA. A young sound guy from the locally provided crew was helping run wires during setup and he looked at Rusty’s old steel. He turned to me and asked what the heck it was. I never got to meet Rusty that night, but wish I had.

| I avoid this section most times, but I see that name ‘Rusty Young’ just now and can’t turn away. Huge influence from both his natural technique, and buoyant song creations. Ability to back up Poco and to lead everyone else playing... it was like a block-party wherever they appeared. Sad to let go of another one of so many now missing. Still have the Suite Steel I bought so long ago. A legacy, along with the Steel Player Hall of Fame. Long may it endure, Rusty. 😔 |

Mark, and John proceeded to learn and play steel very proficiently, which is a huge testament to Rusty's influence, I miss him so much already (Rusty), he was such a major part of my life 15-23 years old, especially

It's still just a bit jarring to think that another one of my heroes has passed. His playing on the early Poco albums helped cement my interest in taking up pedal steel all those years ago. I'm definitely a "West Coast" (plus Lloyd Green) guy, and Rusty's passing leaves just a precious few of the heroes left, including Bobby Black and Jay Dee.
I pray there is another plane that allows his talents to continue and his spirit and soul to endure. RIP Rusty. |

My first time to learn of Rusty was on the Suite Steel LP. Man did that open my eyes. Of course the whole LP did. I was in OKC for whatever and stopped in this big record store to just look and run across the Suite Steel LP and brought it. Got home and put it on and it just blew me away. I still have it. Rusty influence a lot of folks from that LP. May he RIP. J.R. Rose

I may be late to the party but it is because of Rusty that I have eventually made this journey to this instant in time. I was not aware of his passing till I just read it here on the board. PSG gets no respect. I read quite a bit but I guess much wasn't written. It took a long time to start my journey on the PSG, it started with Rusty putting the bug in my ear so many years ago.

It’s good, Joachim, she’s never done a bad version of a song ever, and this is probably Rusty’s greatest songwriting effort. But nothing can compare to Poco’s studio version of Rose. Not even Poco doing it live. I don’t know if they followed Emmylou’s lead of taking the beat into half-time, but it just doesn’t roll along like it does in George Grantham’s 4/4 train. And the vocal arrangement on the album, jeez...if that doesn’t give you goosebumps, you don’t have a pulse.
