Sho-Bud with only 2 pedals

Post by Jett Boyd »

I recently purchased a Sho-Bud 10-string PSG that has red stained maple body and looks like it’s from1970’s. It only has 2 pedals and I don’t see any evidence that it ever had a 3rd pedal. There’s a number on one end plate: 3129. Can some of the experts tell me what model this is.

It's a Sho-Bud Maverick student model. Someone took of the vinyl wood covering and laquered the wood. They did come with 3 floor pedals though.

they were made 3x1 looks like someone added a knee. Not sure but it looks like they wanted to raise and lower the E's which makes sense. all you need is the other floor. I had one of those mavericks way back when. Looks like pretty nice work. Good luck with it.Tenn.Lee

Some are around with 2 pedals and 2 knees rather than 1. Don’t think it was near as common as the 3 and 1 setup but they were built like that on a few occasions.

Russ Pahl plays two-pedal guitars. Doesn't seem to hinder him much (if at all).

Thanks for the great information. Yes the RKR lowers both E’s a half step. The RKL raises 4th string E to F, and then engages the low E and raises it to F while raising the upper E to F#. (So there is a distinct mid point). I’m fairly new to PSG but this is my 3rd instrument (first was 8 string Cougar, second was ZB Student model) With the F# available on the knee lever I can partially get by not having the third pedal. Overall this one plays much easier than my previous PSGs, but I know I’m playing in the kiddie pool compared to the professional instruments. I added a knee lever to my ZB (Thanks Billy Knowles!) so I’ll probably add a third pedal eventually.

well I didn't know that they made a 2x2. I wish I'd had that instead of the 3x1 back in the 70's. Tenn.Lee

Looks like there is a mark on the wood for a C pedal ! (jmho)

This one could have been modified but they definitely made one 2 and 2. It’s my understanding it was primarily late 70s but it was done due to that 4 string lower being a more in demand change than the C pedal for a beginner. How many were built like that, no clue but my guess is likely not too many. Most I’ve seen were the popular 3 and 1 setup including the one I own which is now 3 and 3
