Now you're gettin' smart. I have an Excel Superb S10 with 6 + 4 and a lock-in lever, and wouldn't trade it for a Lamborghini.

I appreciate my Excel more and more as I play it .....It's breaking in so nicely and as time goes by , it just gets smoother and smoother !!..... I got the 8+5 U-12 and could not be happier !! ( OK, make the pickups interchangeable like the Sierra, and I will be happier ) .....

Order the Excel through Scotty ....He's the man and you can custom order it with YOUR spec's !!.....Height , pedals , knee levers, lever placement , pickup , etc ....This is TRUELY a custom made steel just for the individual .... You have no idea how nice it is to sit at a steel , and your hands and legs are in PERFECT position for your style of playing .....No contortion acts here !!.....Just pleasurable playing at it's best ....You can also set up the craziest of copedants with the extensive changer on this puppy !!.... |

The reason Billy Wilson mentioned that possibly I could pick it up at the convention, is because I called Scotty's a few weeks ago about ordering the Excel and at that time the guy I spoke to told me I might be able to pick it up there had I ordered it then. But that was then, I would imagin. But, the guy I spoke to yesterday at Scotty's also mentioned the possibility and I hadn't said anything about it. Could they put it together that soon? I hope so. That would make for a nice weekend.
Sonny, the real test for this Excel will be to outshine my my Klines. One of the reasons I'm buying this new steel is becuase it has a spring system the makes the pedals move very easily. That's not a problem with the Kline but I'm starting to develop shin problems and this is one thing that might help.

| I'd like to also put in a good word about their keyed guitars. I got a U-12 last year at the convention & it continues to be a fine fine guitar. I have adjusted it slightly as the year has gone by & it plays & sounds better & better. Mitsuo thought the keyed guitars had a fuller sound & I agree. |

| That's certainly competatively priced,,,and less than some,,,,thanks for that info,,,I remember several years ago scotty had one that I guess had been in stock too long and he offered a special price on it,,around 2400 or 2500 best I remember,,,I've often wished I would have bought it,,,just wasn't a good time,,,cash flow wise,,, |

Nope , not on the payroll......I just like to give credit where credit is due .....There's a lot more folks that like to complain about what's NOT good , and sometimes I'm guilty of that myself, but I also like to commend a builder or a company on a job well done.....I say this because I have been thru probably a dozen or so pedal steels in the last 2 yrs ....I've been buying and selling a lot of the top brands to try them out and move on to see what else is available .... Maybe even more than 12 ?? Anyway , the Excel is my first actuall BRAND NEW pedal steel that I oredered to my spec's , and I'm totally blown away by it ..... I can get it to sound like just about any pedal steel with a little EQ, but it plays so much easier ....When you think of what you get , and truely a CUSTOM built pedal steel for the same price or lower than the competition, it's a no brainer to me .....I picked Bill Staffords brain , and also Michael Johnstones brain, and any body else who would mumble the word Excel for almost 2 years !!...I think I emailed Bill so many times that he might of thought that I was his long lost son or something !!....It took me over a year, almost 2, to finally order one.....I'm glad I finally did !!.....I have never had a pedal steel get BETTER as time goes on .....I"m impressed !!....... ........Jim[This message was edited by James Quackenbush on 16 July 2006 at 04:39 PM.] |

Congrats, Don! I've messed briefly with Johnstone's Excel, it's loaded and plays and sounds great. Also, Al Vescovo has a 14-string C6 only beauty, about 10 pedals, at least 6 knees, plays like butter. But don't sell the Klines, either, they still have amazing tone. I still think a Kline through an original Webb amp is one of the best tones I've ever heard.

Here's a picture of my Excel Superb S10 6 + 4. The basic tuning is E 6/9 -- similar to E9 chromatic but without the chromatic strings. The lock-in lever pulls it into an A6 just Like the standard C6 but 3 frets lower. Pedals 1 & 2 and the knee levers go with the E 6/9 tuning but the knee levers also add some good changes when in the A6 mode. Pedals 3, 4, 5 & 6 are the same as pedals 4, 5, 6 & 7 on a standard C6 tuning. These tunings go all the Way back to whatI used on non-pedal steels in the 50's.
After using the Excel keyless system for 2 years, I will probably never go back to a keyed guitar.

Congrats on being a new Excel owner.. you will love that guitar.. no matter what color it is..
We are another very proud Excel S-12 Uni owner.. Mr. Smooth.. Bill Stafford convinced me this was the way to go.. I really no complaint on my Excel.. I had a BMI S-12 for years, and was a great guitar built by Zane Beck, another great player-builder. The only thing I had to adjust to was the string spacing on the BMI and BMI are slightly different. Roy I like that Red Excel sure is purty... I could not agree more on the keyless concept..
