Do any of you musicians out there use fingrs instead of picks? Advantages/Disadvantages?
Does anyone know of any recordings of players useing fingers only?

My preference would be for picks.
1. Greater dynamic range (The main reason)
2. Pick blocking
3.Most of the legends use picks
I think that the trend towards no picks is motivated by impatience, more so than a search for that elusive "Tone".

How many of the acknowledged professional steel guitarist with years of knowledge, training and experience........play without picks.

I've always sorta used that as my guide.

At least two spring to mind: Bobby Seymour and Freddie Roulette.

Mike the pro players that where finger picks is overwhelming to the picks side, and I myself am a pick player as I encourage others to where them, however that is not to say it isn't possible, without picks I would think blocking would be easier since you could use your finger instead of dropping your palm, and you may not go through strings as much as you wouldn't strick the strings so hard, but the one thing I love about picks is the bright tone.

I play sans picks mostly for
big voicing finger blocking control,
same as Dr. Hugh's logic.

I do use picks some times,
and the dynamics is less of an issue vs attack.
I can damn near pluck a string offn the change without picks,
so with picks is only quicker attack.
