I worked really hard to try and emulate the feel of Andy Iona on this version of Carefree. His vibrato and touch where amazing and not easy to assimilate. The Lap Steel was recorded through a Yamaha THR10 in the acoustic setting directly into a Reaper (DAW) on my PC via USB. I recorded the 2 Ukulele backing tracks separately. One playing on the beat and the other a little looser to give a more live feel. They are panned around 35% in the stereo field. I recorded the Bass and then passed it through a low pass filter with quite an extreme setting. I did this to try and give a subliminal feel to the bass rather than a clear audio of the notes. Finally I used an Ezzee- slide bar to erase as much string noise as possible. Tuning GBC#GBD low to high.

Great job! With the multistring harmonies peeking in here and there, there was a little bit of JB's version too. I tried teaching this tune to my (now disbanded) band and it was quite a challenge for them getting the feel right, its almost harder because its so slow, and those pauses you have to hit...so if you feel like parting with your backing track, let me know! That "looser" feel on the second track really fits. This was one of the first handful of songs I figured out in C6 when I started playing...
I found the sheet music for it on Ebay and bought it just because I was curious about the unplayed (and as far as I've ever seen, unrecorded!) verse of the song. So far as I can read music, we aren't missing much, the chorus is mostly the good bit. _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Very nice, Mike! I'm currently working on my ukulele skills to record backing tracks as you have done. That's a great song and you've nailed it. That's an interesting tuning I'm not familiar with. |
