I found this pic on a blog on Tumbler. Luthier Kilin Reece says "Bought at an antique shop here in Honolulu, I’ll take another look at it and see if the back of the photo has any information." So some identification may be forthcoming!
Update: the only info on the back said it was taken in Los Angeles. Still a mystery! _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com

Hi Fred - and congrats on your new record!
Oahu? Regal? Maybe Martin?
Here's a vintage Martin Hawaiian. Doesn't match exactly.

Was Oahu in business back in the '30s?

Oahu goes back at least to the '20s, if not the prior decade.
However, pyramid bridges like that were used by many builders between roughly 1900 and 1930. |

Hi Fred - and congrats on your new record! |
Thanks Andy! You remember it was your post about the Vega Console Electric back in 2010 or so that made me get mine. Thanks again for that! Maybe it was just waiting for this project, to get aquainted with the Bechstein grand piano, which also is from the 1930s.
Back to topic - thanks for your expertise Noah, love your oldfrets website!
Cheers,

Love old photos like these!
Is that an Oahu lap steel? The "Spanish" guitar to the left has a bridge that looks like the aluminium bridge on some of the 1930s Oahus.
Thanks for posting Andy!
Cheers,

The one in front looks like a Oscar Schmidt Stella to me, its '20s for sure. I have had one kinda like it, dig the crazy 10th fret dot. The other spanish style looks like a Regal or Lyon and Healy at some point those companies blended, the Hawaiian style looks Lyon and Healy to me too.
The steel player and guitar player on the right look like brothers to me so maybe the bought their L&H guitars at the same time.

Looks like old US Navy uniforms in the pic, perhaps they were an official Navy band? _________________ All lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest - Paul Simon |
