For the past 7 or 8 years I've been playing a Fender 400 8 string, and for some 15 years before that I played a triple eight stringmaster.
Now I want to get a single neck ten string. I've been doing more traveling and flying to gigs the past year or two. So I would like to get something a little more modern that would be under 45 pounds in a flight case.
I really love Shobuds, but I don't know if an old single ten would be in the weight and price range I need.
So what are my choices for a light guitar with big tone for around $1200. |

I might suggest a S-10 Carter.
They have many things going for them, such as the light weight, great service, availability of parts, east to work on and change copedent. I think an S-10 carter weighs like 36 lbs.
Used ones come around here every so often, and I bet you could get one in your price range, especially if you went up to like $1350... |

So far the Carter is in the lead. I like the tone it has better than the GFI I tried. |

What was it about the GFI tone that you thought was lacking? Was it an Ultra model, or a student guit.? I've played a carter before, and it was as nice as can be.
I ask cause I'm really fiending for a GFI D-10 keyless... *drool*
I think GFI used to make a single frame s-10, but not any longer, only SD-10s. Either way, you never see them for sale much. |

The GFI that I tried sounded a little sterile, but I played it through a solid state amp and I'm used to tube amps, so that may have been the difference.
It had nice clarity on the top end and the lows were there, it just didn't have any enough bite in the midrange for me. |

What kind of pickup was on the GFI? If you are used to the Fender 400 and non-pedal guitars, you might find that a single-coil would give you a more bite-y tone than a humbucker. That goes no matter what kind of guitar we are talking about. |

Thanks for all the suggestions and email offers on some nice steels.
I ended up buying a S10 Sho-Bud Pro I from fellow forumite Neil Lang.
It weighs 46 pounds with the case and I got it for just under my price range.
It just has the 3 pedal two knees lever set up for now. I already sent an email to John Coop about adding two more knee levers. I just have to do a few more gigs before I can afford it.
I'll post some pictures of it when I get it.
Once again THANKS to all on this great forum!!! |
