"The Great Speckled Bird" is mentioned in Jeremiah 12:9, King James Version.
As an aside, this same melody was used for "The Wild Side Of Life" and "It Wasn't God Who Made Honkytonk Angels".

It seems they all came from the AP Carter song. "Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes" A preacher wrote Great Speakled Bird.
Great links and playing by Paul, as usual.

Rick you are right on...1928 ...just listened to June Carter singing this old tune I don't know how to post video"s but it tells the story of this old tune and all of its variations ...they are all good...she can mimic Roy Acuff pretty good... |

Thanks David and Rick for the kind words. Erv, you are right about the scripture and other songs with the same melody. |

The reason we should play hymns and gospel music on the pedal steel is because we are instructed to do so in the Bible.
There are three references in Psalms to "Give praises to the Lord on an instrument of 10 strings".
Psalms 33:2
Psalms 92:3
and Psalms 144.9
So lets: "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord"

That makes me believe there will be steel guitar in heaven. That would be great. |
