The apartment where I am currently living does not have sufficient room to setup and play my MSA D-10, so I have been considering getting something without pedals so that I can at least start playing again.
I love Western Swing and don't play E9 well enough that changing to a different tuning will hurt me.
My first steel over 35 years ago was a Fender Deluxe 8.
What is a good guitar to search for? And yes, price is an object - I need the best "deal" I can find.

| I just bought an 8-string Supro "Jet Airliner" made in the 50's from a SGF brother, and it might be what you're looking for, too. It's small enough to play on your lap. Also has tripod legs that you can use, sitting or or standing. It sounds dandy in A6th or C6th tuning, and the price didn't break the bank. |

Yes, size is a factor - actually the ability to set it up quickly, break it back down and store it when I am not playing it is the biggest factor. If I could leave the D-10 up I'd be fine, but that is not currently feasable.

I have a 6 string console Supro that can also be played on the lap, decent from my limited talent point of view.
Wish I had that 8 string supro though. Had one when I was a kid, about a 1959, black and white, just like the 6 string I found on ebay. There are some on these posts who put the Supro down, but I think the sustain is adequate and the pick-up is certainly powerful.
My only complaint is that my volume control will get scratchy right near max volume, but I bought a fender pedal and don't use the one on the guitar now. The other minor complaint is the legs get lose, but I could wrap some silicon plumbing tape around them it I wanted to take the time to walk to the garage. |

Fender Deluxe single 8 Stringmaster....compact in case...easy to set up...sounds great...fits in the overhead in it's case...wish I NEVER sold mine,

I would go for any lap steel that sounds reasonably good. There's a lot of music you can get out of them and they take up very little room. ziggie (Don Zeitler)
