Moana Loa Conservatory Hawaiian Guitar 1920's $349

This Moana Loa Conservatory guitar was probably made by Oahu or Regal in the late 20"s or early 30"s before the square necks became ubiquitous. It has a thick V neck more common in the earlier guitars of this type.

It has a B-Band dual pickup with preamp driving an under saddle pickup and a contact piezo mounted underneath on the top. There is a blend and volume control mounted under the sound hole.

The guitar has a delicate but full bodied sound acoustically and the pickup is a studio quality enhancement of that sound.

The guitar has been gone over and any separation has been reglued. It has a bone nut and saddle.

Hi,

I'm a rank beginner to lap steel. I saw your ad for the Moana Loa with pickup and it sounds interesting.

Do you think this would make a reasonable lap steel ? I'm too new to guitars to make a determination myself. Wrists are wrecked so I'm relegated to lap style. Oddly I kind of prefer it anyway.

Lastly, where are you located ?

Hi Colman,
While this guitar was made to learn Hawaiian music, probably sold door to door with a package or subscription lessons plan, a lot has changed in learning how to play any genre of lap style guitar. Early Hawaiian music started on acoustic guitars but quickly evolved to resonator metal bodied guitars and into electric guitars to get the volume needed in ensemble and bandstand playing.
If you really like the woody acoustic sound of a guitar, this one has it in spades and the pickup in this guitar magnifies that sound. If you like the more “electric sounds” and sustain of not only Hawaiian but western swing, country or blues music, then an electric “lap steel” might be more appropriate as your first guitar.
