I have to play the weiss for a puppet show, can't have any microphone, so PU's only (God only knows when the show will be played live, but that's another story).
This is not the "traditionnal" weiss tone (whatever that means), but after lots of trial and errors, I found something not technically difficult to implement, to match the music :

Bill : I don't play much the regular guitar these days, but thanks for listening. I wrote a lot in Drop G tuning, much less in open D tuning.

Gene : I have an Aura (the Jerry Douglas model). I don't like it. For some reason, there is something wrong (to my ears) in those type of system. I use a Rare Earth Fishman) and a Schatten on this weiss.

The harmonic possibilities are quite narrow, indeed, but these parallel progressions of minor chords seem to have a mind of their own. A cinematic character I find appropriate for the puppet show I'm working on.

Very different than the open D major tuning. They are the only tunings I play. So I put a Keith peg on the third string to go from major to minor and back.

Can you give more details on the pickup? It looks like a Rare Earth but you say you use a Schatten. Is it a stereo combination of electric and soundboard? Whatever....I like the sound. I use a Baggs M1, sometimes with a Fishman dreadnaught imaging pedal.

Fishman Rare Earth *and* Schatten HFS (the old Macaferri model that I used in a gypsy guitar).
Each with a dedicated jack output (I don't use stereo jacks on instruments)
Hard pan left and right respectively.
Now there is also some pedals geekery, two reverbs, one delay, a modulation unit, and an old Raven Labs preamp, in some involved configuration.
The whole thing ends up with 4 discrete signals on any mixer.
Large range of possibilities, and very easy manual changes on the fly. No memories nor MIDI.

no, phosphor bronze in the weiss. The Fishman is voiced for them, as most of soundhole PU's. Nickel strings on those emphasize the wound strings too much. The Schatten don't care anyway. of course, being a piezo.
