resources in London

Post by David Mansfield »

Does anyone know of a store in the London area that sells strings and other high-end accessories for steel guitar? Maybe one of the shops on Denmark St. ("Tin Pan Alley")? I'm Zoom-teaching a London actor how to play steel guitar for an upcoming film and finding sending everything from here to be frustrating.

I don't know about "in person" shops in the UK, but your student might want to try Thomann UK as an on line source. I think this is the right link . . .

You might try calling or emailing Newtone strings for info on their local dealers.

All music shops in England are closed until early December although some are doing click & collect/mail order. The guy to ask about steel in London would be Jeff Mead. He is a member of the forum.

I am not far outside London, what do you need?? Ron at NoTom guitars in Denmark street is a retailer, Newtone strings in the UK are a good resource. everything is pretty quick via mail order here, I have friends with sizeable steel collections also. Drop me a line if if is confidential.

To be honest, I get most of my steel supplies online. Bars from Basil Henriques (his Ezzee-slide is all I'll use now) picks from Ebay, though I pretty much have a lifetime supply I reckon. Gerry Hogan's shop (Hogan Music) are great for steel guitar accessories too.

As for strings, what even are steel guitar strings? I just work out the gauges I need and buy (or find in my box of strings) regular guitar strings in the appropriate gauges.

I do sometimes buy sets from Newtone (in my preferred gauges) for convenience but they are still just regular guitar strings.

As all "non-essential" shops in England are currently closed (for some unexplainable reason steel guitar stuff falls into this category) online is his only choice.

I'm sure I could find a spare bar and a set of picks I could send him (though I use metal thumb picks) but wouldn't be any quickr than mail order.
