It's normal for a single coil pickup to suck up some electromagnetic interference from the environment and send it down the wire to your amp. Sounds buzzy, especially when the volume pedal is wide open or the amp is cranked up. But you probably don't play much with the pedal wide open. Hopefully the noise doesn't overpower the music you're putting out.
That's why humbuckers exist. They 'buck' that hum off by neutralizing it, but at the cost of changing the tone a little.
You can sometimes rotate your guitar around to a different position or move it in the room and lessen single coil noise. Keep it away from old-school CRTs (TV's and old computer monitors that have to heat up a second before coming on). I think things in the electrical system can introduce hum too. If you have a neon beer sign stolen from your local bar in your music room, turn it off. I think dimmer switches on your house lights or ceiling fan can do it too when they're not turned all the way on or off.

Dimmers and florescent lights are bad too, so remember that those twisted "pigtail" screw-in bulbs ARE florescent lights!
Keep them out of your music area. |
