Dicky Overbey

Post by Michael Voorhis »

Searching on YouTube, I can only find 2 of Dicky's non-christmas songs. there are also a few recordings of him playing with Amber Digby. I've been trying to learn and tab out some of his playing. Does anyone know where I can find some more of his music? He is an amazing player and I would like to hear more.

Dicky had one instrumental CD that I know of. I have copy somewhere. They may be available at some internet sites.

Do a youtube search for "Amber Digby - Live at Swiss Alp Hall". Lots of videos from that nite that were made into a DVD - Dicky is on every cut.

Man, videos like that really make me think he was the best player that ever lived. I know we've all got different tastes, but the way he plays does something to me that I cant explain

Dickey Overby

Post by David Zornes »

I just listened to some samples of the aforementioned cd with Leona Williams. This cd has Dickey Overby all over it. The tone, the pulling of strings, the conviction that Dickey got out of his steel was unsurpassed- but the proof is in his playing. Dickey elicited every bit of feel he could get out of the strings of his steel. I LOVE his full chord progressions. Goodness!

You're welcome. I used to keep up Dicky's Sho~bud's and changed strings on them when he needed and then set up his custom Copedent on his Last steel; that LDG you see him play with his Daughter Amber Digby; which BTW...I just set up his Copedent on a LDG that looks just like Dicky's for his Grandson Caleb; and Caleb can already play the intro to Amber's version of>

Ok Ricky, I’ll be the first one to ask. Can you tell us what his “custom copedent” was or would you have to kill all of us if you told us.🤔

Sure thing Danny. I just snapped a picture of the word doc. This is how I set Dicky's last LDG up with and added his Grandson's name, as I just set up a LDG exactly like PawPaw's, as he wanted. Also for Caleb; I put barrel tuning instruction reminders at bottom...I'm a nerd that way..ha.
Image
Also there is one more line for 6th string split tune that got cut off..oops...sorry....but here is all 4 lines>
6th string split tuning procedure.
1. Tune open G# at tuning Key
2. Tune G# to A “b” pedal on raise rod barrel tuner.
3. With pedal down; tune A to G on the lower rod barrel tuner while lowering lever.
4. Then with no pedal down…Tune G# to F# on the raise rod barrel tuner.
(also; YES, there is a half stop barrel tuner underneath for that 1st and 2nd string change on the RKL...that was something I've ONLY seen Dicky ever do; nobody else did...OOOOH and the secret way only I know how to do to get a "WOUND" 6th string to lower a whole tone from a raised note(Ed Fulawka taught me)...ah..ha...)so yes I can't tell anyone how I do that or I will have to kill somebody...ha....

Maybe someone remembers, but I think there’s a Johnny Bush live show somewhere on YouTube where Dickie is really bearing down on it. It may just be audio. And thanks for the info Ricky Davis.

This may be a repeat of a post I did several years back but here it is again. I saw Dicky in a outdoor summer concert in the mid to late seventy's. He was with Hank Jr. and was playing a Blanton D-10. Wow, What a sound and what a performance. Then in the middle of 82 saw him with Milsap. I think I remember him playing a Sho_Bud with great sound and a great performance by Ronnie Milsap. I have kept up with him since and have a number of his works and CD's & LP's with different artist and yes, Leona & him did some really great recordings. So sad he has left us, RIP Dickey. J.R.
