Back in the day, my E9 pickup died on my Zum during a gig...On break, I pulled the strings, swapped it for an Emmons pickup I had in my gigbag, restrung & made it for the next set. Sounded great.

I have a 1980 D10 that has original pickups, probably Bruce wound . I haven’t been tempted to change them. I have a 1989 S10. It had a probably Bruce wound on it. First I tried an E66, too bright for me. Then a 10-1, it was pretty good. Then I tried a
19k Emmons single coil, it’s probably the best I’ve had on there. My other Zums have their original TTs. A friend of mine visited with Jerry Wallace shortly before his passing & was told that Jerry & Bruce had agreed that 18.5 TTs were the best TTs on most Zums. I’ve heard Zums with other pickups that sounded good also but don’t have any first hand experience with them.

thanks for the advice, if i had a true tone i would try it. i think i remember somewhere along the way that john hughey used emmons single coils? also have seen on the forum that some one is building pickups that are equilavent to the true tone and also one that is equal to the emmons single coils?....thanks jack

I have a 1982 D-10 Zum. It has the original single coils. I was told that at some point, Bruce stopped making his pickups and had Jerry Wallace make them. I know this is not of much help, except it's a lead. Bruce is still living. Why doesn't somebody just ask him the history of his pickups.

Danny, interesting comment about your experience with the E-66 being too bright. I bought an Emmons pp last week that has an E-66 in it. I use an Evans amp, which is also bright. I have to use a Freeloader turned all the way down to control the highs. My Zum and Evans
get along just fine. I've never liked humbuckers as well as single coils. (with my Electro Harmonix DeBugger. hum is non-existent) I'm going to swap out the E-66 for either an original Emmons single coil or a Jerry Wallace. I did this on a previous PP and liked the Wallace just fine. Maybe try one of the new direct replacement ones that Scott Schwartz is building.

George, I'm just not a fan of bright pickups. Along with my Zums I have an S10 Emmons push pull. I think it had an E66 when I got it. I put a 19k Emmons single coil in it. It's a little tone monster. I've been playing for about 34 years. In all that time I have only run into single coil hum one time. I don't even worry about it.
