Straight into Twin only-No pedals

Post by Dirk Edwards »

I have two (76,73 blackfaced) Twins .One with EV's and the other with Oxfords.I love them both.

Does anyone just go and blow with volume pedal
Still? Just curious?

Thanks Dirk :D

The majority of my playing is just steel, volume pedal, amp. I'll only add an effect when I want to use it. I've been to hundreds of jams and steel shows and I hear very little difference between the guys who do as I do (the "minimalists"), and the guys with a big rack or case full of stomp-boxes.

Overall, I pay very little attention to a player's gear.

Dirk and Donny, do you use the amp's reverb?

When I was still touring,I used a lot of rental Twins...

Ihe only effect I ever used with them was a Fulltone OCD for overdriven lap steel...as far as the pedal steel,I just used the amp reverb(if it worked)...

The last band I toured with was so loud that the Twins were horribly inadequate...forget about getting a nice clean sound...

I have re- discovered the normal channel and use a reverb pedal most of the time.

Love the older music, and I think why not try and simulate that?

Why digital,why boosts,ect?

There is a good interview with Pete Anderson that just came out.He touches a little on it> True tone lounge

I rarely use any effects other than a touch of the amp's reverb. I prefer the steel to sound like a steel ;)

I've played a lot of gigs using just a Twin Reverb and the spring reverb it contains. Sometimes if a stage is shaking too much for the spring reverb I'll use a reverb pedal (Wet Reverb). Lately I've been adding a touch of delay with a Strymon Brigadier. But if the room has a lot of natural echo the delay gets left out of the chain.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

You betcha Dirk; I'm glad I can be any inspiration. As when you hear me; you hear my Great inspirations and mentors:
Tom Brumley(my next door neighbor when I started playing Steel guitar); Lloyd Green(who has inspired me to always be me and listen to me..etc) and of course many others; I wear them ALL on my shoulder sleeve...ha

Yes Ricky can bring it on strong. That ShoBud and Twin was smoking hot. I still use a Twin Reverb on occasion. Still have 2 silverface Twins. I'm trying to adjust to the new Tonemaster Twin.

Thanks JR and thanks Larry.
Dirk,
Yes; my settings on my Twin never change. BUT; they depend on several things> Mine is a 1970 Blackfaced from Silver; meaning the exact same point to point wiring as a blackface; but keeping the 100 watts of Tube power and mine are the hard to fine Jan Phillips Military Tubes; until a year ago; but my settings never changed and I use 70's JBL K-130's in separate cabs now...but back in the day when I wanted the 15" K-130; I made a new baffle board to fit in regular Twin Cab.
I use Reverb channel 1
Bright switch ON(up)
Volume 4(there's no master on blackface)
Treble 4
Mid 1 (because a steel ALREADY has natural mid-range)
Bass 4 1/2 to 5.
Reverb 5(everyones twins act differently on this.

Great playing there Ricky!!! Love the Bud!!!! I don't use any effects either. Just a little reverb and a Steel Guitar Black Box through my NV112.

Ricky that's a beautiful rig. I think it fits your style quite well. I'm a fan of Dale Watson and also of the Texas show you played on. They still use your hot licks on the start of the show.

did that for 25 years. Steel - V pedal - Twin.

Telecaster > Twin

AMP reverb. I'm really anal about many things, AMP reverb is not one of them !

Repeated the same process with HR Deluxe / HR Deville.

These days I do use a small pedal board. Primarily for TUNER and Delay.

Yes Lee's got it. Tru Country. Probably reruns now with Heather Myles. Lots of shows with Rick Price on steel. Good show with real country music and lots of shuffles. Available on the RFD television station.
