How do these guitars sound compared to other vintage guitars in this price range? Fender Dual Pro 8, Stringmaster, Gibson’s...etc.
Sustain, tone, tuning?

John, I can speak from experience of owning a D-8 Stringmaster and D-8 Excel.

I prefer the D-8 Excel for overall tone especially on the treble strings. It has good sustain and is easier to tune than the Stringmaster. I like the way the instrument is setup for playing. It looks better also.

I sold nine instruments last year from my collection. I sold the D8 Stringmaster and kept the D8 Excel. That should confirm what I am saying.

Is this model the 22 1/2” or longer scale?
Does it have tone and volume? If so, is the tone reachable for effects?

The Excel is short scale.
it has both tone and volume controls.
The tone control gives good contrast from bass to treble,
A solid guitar.

Don, thanks for your thoughtful replies.
I’m curious if you can use the Excel tone control for the “boowa” effect like Kayton Roberts or Chris Scruggs do on the Dual Pro Fender guitars?
Cheers, John

I am not sure about the "boowa" effect on the Excel. I never have tried it because I play Hawaiian music.

I would say just do your best impression of Kayton Roberts and you will be able to do it.

You are aware that Jerry Byrd was the brains or expertise behind the Excel Steel Guitars. They were made to his specifications.

Yes, and Jerry Byrd did that effect on very early country sessions as well,, but I don’t know what guitar he used back in that era.
I’m an Excel PSG owner and I appreciate his attention to detail.

scale length

These came in 22.25 and 24.25 scale lengths. Common knowledge is that JB used 22.25. Let me know
if you are looking for a long scale.
I like Excel consoles a lot.

Hi Richard, waiting for some gear to sell but am interested in your Excel. Would you consider shipping to Sydney Australia?
