Does anyone else use an onboard treble roll-off on their pedal steel? I have one and also a bypass switch for it and I use the roll-off (a small amount) most of the time.

Hi Bill, I used to do the same as you, use my onboard tone control to roll off a little bit of the highs. However, I no longer do that after I purchased Brad Sarno’s new Freeloader 2. It sweetens those highs and I no longer have to use the guitars treble control to roll them back. The new Freeloader 2 also has a separate designated tuner out that is a plus.

I do. I made a little box that plugs right into the steel’s output jack with a passive tone control. 710 pickup into pot pedal and Milkman amp is much too bright for my tastes otherwise. Used this setup with several tube amps and both previous steels (70s Sho~Buds.)

Marc, what filter cap did you use? And a 250k or 500k pot?

Only my Fender 400 still has a working tone control. But if I want to take some of the "treble edge" off my other guitars before the signal gets to the amp, I just use a longer câble. I used to use George L's câbles, but now, to fit in with the modern trend towards less treble and a "rounder" sound, I'll just use longer cables.

The Emmons U-12 I played many years ago had a tone control; but, I never cared much for it.

I much prefer the results provided by my Sarno FreeLoader.

I have no recollection at all! Just opened it up to find a 1 meg pot and .022uF cap. I made this at least 10 years ago, couldn’t live without it!

Marc, cool thanks for the info.
Godfrey, I have a similar coily cord and they were always my favorite from the 60s.

I do. A few steels have them, but they have fallen out of favor with builders.
Having it on a bypass switch is nice. Use only if you want it. Even the PP Emmons had the bypass switch way back when.

My control is on board and is a 500k pot and an .047 mfd capacitor. Where I play determines if I use it and how much. A bypass switch allows me to go in and out with it quickly without losing my setting.

I, too, find a tone control / treble roll-off to be a very musical tool to have on hand but I, too, find that the Sarno Freeloader's control does it much better (even though it is technically not a tone control).

What's the difference between rolling off the highs with an onboard filter, or a black box, or a long cable, and just doing it on the amp?

What am I missing here?

On my guitar I like the convenience, simplicity, and the speed at which I can set it or put it in or out of the chain. I also only use an RV3, cord and amp. I am in no way recommending it to anyone else, or saying it is better or best than any other way.

I used to have a Goodrich 7A Matchbox.
Pretty handy after using it for awhile.

I like a darker tone. Sometimes. Other times I change it to suit. Also I find all amps too bright for pedal steel.

All three of my pedal guitars have a tone pot (although one had been disconnected by a previous owner). I only use it when I plug in a dirt pedal, to roll off the highs and cut the harshness in an effort to make it sound more musical.
