Sho Bud ground hum?

Post by Andrew Ivens »

I'm working on a '75 Sho Bud Maverick with a GL E-66 and can't seem to get the ground hum to go away. I have tried re-soldering the connections from the pickup to the input jack and also run an extra wire from the ground of the jack to the changer mechanism and still no luck. Any suggestions? I'm hoping it's not an issue with the pickup... :?

You can do a search on the forum for this particular pickup.

Some report an uneven string response among other issues.

But some like David Hartley got a good sound out of that pickup. The hum at the beginning of David's clip is his mic so he can converse.

It is said there are different models of the E-66 depending on the blade inside the pickup.

Easiest way is to swap the pickup or even just get another pickup and rig it up so you can connect it to your amp and just hold it over the pickup area of your Maverick without having to install it while strumming the strings. If it's the pickup (not your cable or amp or other units in the chain on the way to the amp) then getting another one or the one you have checked for breaks in the windings would be the next step.

No hum through your amp with another guitar?

I've done multiple tests and it is definitely not coming from any other part of my rig. It's looking like I'll have to get the pickup checked out for a break in the winding.

Thanks for the advice!

Did you try reversing the connections at the jack?

It could be the jack itself
