Buddy Emmons on the Touch My Heart album. With Ray Price, of course. The title cut is a favorite of mine but, the entire album still leaves me spellbound by it's sounds. "I Lie A Lot" from the TMH album is super cool. I love all the cuts on that record. It was the album that made me want to play.
As far as I know, Buddy cut that album with the Wrap-Around which later became known as "The Wagon." I believe Buddy once said that that horn had so much sustain that to mute it he had to pour water on it..!!

The rest of Steve Young's album "Renegade Picker" is great, too--lots of Buddy all over it.

I'm a huge fan of John Hughey and many of his rides come to mind. Dan Dugmore has done some really nice solos. Listen to "Crash Here Tonight," Toby Keith. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFZ9c_n4234

Amen, Tiny! Contrary to popular opinion, this is the quintessential Emmons/Price album. As a side note, (no pun intended) I actually played this album with a metronome and it stayed closer to the metronome than any other album I owned at the time (which was a lot!) YMMVBuddy Emmons on the Touch My Heart album. With Ray Price, of course. The title cut is a favorite of mine but, the entire album still leaves me spellbound by it's sounds.

I'm not sure the people in the audience are aware that they just heard the best there is.

Earlier in this thread John Drury posted this link to the Time Jumpers with P.F.Jr. backing up a singer doing somewhere between. Beautiful rendition. Does anyone know the singers name?

Hey I figured this one out today! I'll try to put up a video lesson on it if anyone is interested... I've seen a tab and there is one video lesson up but, at least to my ear, neither are all that correct.... so i just dove in and figured it out... great solo for sure.Barry Blackwood wrote:PF solo on 'Whenever You Come Around' - Vince and Sting rendition on the Crossroads tv special.

I agree Dave !!!Dave Mudgett wrote:Absolutely - John Hughey was totally sublime on slow material. But I can hardly believe nobody has mentioned Tom Brumley's playing on Together Again, and many other songs. I Sang Dixie with Dwight comes to mind - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMQI-L8Pf8k

So I figured this out. I think there are a couple of "Franklin Pedal" moves on here that I could not quite get but none of the big phrases... I refered to the video to definitely see the positions and most of this is pretty dang close... of course sometimes you can miss a harmony underneath or something... and I'm sure Paul didn't play it the same way twice... but great solo... the run up on the V chord G is worth the price of admission really.

As always if you want to kick me a buck it's much appreciated.. I make my living through music.. so as many of you know.. i've taken a beating lately! But either way enjoy!
Also make sure to subscribe as I dont always post my new vids that I do up here on the forum.. if you have a YT account it will tell you anytime I put something up... I'm available for hire to break down stuff as well! Done lots of this sort of things... looking forward to diving into more of these slow tunes as well...
I've been practicing a LOT during the shutdown but not as much pedal steel as acoustic and electric guitar... part of why i was looking for suggestions.. just some inspiration. Thanks!

Never heard of this singer, but this is what real country is all about. Wish I knew who the steeler was, but it's a spine-tingler.

Marsha Thornton with Tom Brumley on steel, on a great old Buck Owens song! Marsha had a few charting songs back in the early 90s, then unfortunately largely faded from the mainstream scene as country music "evolved".Rich Upright wrote:Never heard of this singer, but this is what real country is all about. On another point about this whole topic - to have a great steel solo, you need a great song with a great singer and a great band. All of that present here.
PS - here's Buck's original version of this from 1966, of course with Tom on steel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7nh2r1ThM0

There's a couple of tracks Buddy Emmons plays on with Judy Collins on the Who Knows Where the Time Goes LP. They both get me every time. Absolutely sublime steel.
I Pity The Poor Immigrant (with James Burton playing dobro for a few bars in the middle of Buddy's break):

And, Bird On A Wire, but I don't remember there being an actual solo. Buddy is all over the place, in a good way.
