Bali Hai - 1961

Post by Andy Volk »

This is kind of a cool "Easy Listening/Space Age Pop" arrangement with nice intonation in the steel playing. More of a minimalist sound than many of the string and vibe-drenched records of the era. 'Wonder who the players were?

Wow, that's a very cool, interesting sound. Exotica lives! I like the stark, "in your face" mix with the steel guitar front and center.

Here's the song list on the back of the album. A surprising number of standards on the record. No mention of who the players were. Recorded in New York, 1961.

Can't go wrong with the Living Stereo records. I just bought an LP copy from Amazon. Thanks!

:D
I have this LP and it is for sale. I thought I had a list of players on the LP (Courtesy of Dirk Vogel) but he did not list the players. Perhaps John Marsden in England would know(?). The LP I have is in top condition. The only setback is that I'd have to find it in storage with 1000+ LPs and it's too cold to go out there.

This post is seven years old and the link to the audio is probably inactive.

That is quite the recording (Bali Hai). I postulated in the other thread in Steel Players that maybe this was a studio musician group from NYC but that's just a wild guess. I ended up with their first album by accident (a Discogs seller bundling it with my other Hawaiian music purchases, probably just trying to clear up space).

My first introduction to the song, which perhaps unexpectedly was not the musical, remains my favorite. No steel guitar (at least readily apparent), but I feel like Benny Kalama was in there with his influence...

Wow! That Mauna Loa Islanders arrangement is interesting. And the guitar tone is excellent. I find a lot of steel recording late 50s early 60s, really thin and whiny. A lot of Santo stuff is dreadful tonally. I know, I know. Wash your mouth out with soap!

This one is sooooo wrong ... Mariachi/banjo Hawaiian. AND the producer was Miles Davis' producer! He must have needed to buy new panels in his rumpus room.
