Who played this steel break?

Post by Alex Formento »

Hey y’all,
Been listening to Ricky Skaggs’ album ‘Highways and Heartaches’ lately and wondering if anyone knows who is playing steel on “Let’s Love the bad times away”? Sounds like Lloyd Green to me but I know Weldon was on the album too. Thanks!

It’s Weldon.
One of the great steel albums of all time, IMO.

It does not sound to me like Lloyd or Weldon. Bruce Bouton played on some of his recordings so I wonder if it might be Bruce.

Discogs agrees with Fred. Credits Weldon as the steeler on that track. Lists Bruce Bouton and Lloyd Green on the album as well:

Lloyd, Weldon and Bruce are all credited on the album. Take your pick.

It's a real fine album, but the highlight for me is Nothing Can Hurt You, Lloyd's ending solo is so beautiful and delicate.

I played for Ricky in the mid-nineties. Most of the earlier stuff, Bruce Bouton played. Lloyd always played on a few things. I would have to listen to the whole album to see which one I would think that Weldon played on. If Weldon did play on this one, he did a very good job getting Bruce’s tone cause that sure sounds a lot like Bruce’s old push-pull. Plus, it just doesn’t sound enough like Weldon’s style to me. Weldon gets a certain tone and does some things a certain way that I usually have no problem determining what he plays on. To me, this just sounds more like Bruce. Listen to Bruce play You Make Me Feel Like A Man on Skaggs Live In London and see if you can hear what I hear in comparison. I don’t remember the credits except that Ricky used his band most of the time, but, he did like to use Lloyd a lot. Then, in 1986, Terry Crisp went to work for Skaggs and started playing on the sessions. Ricky sure had great tastes in steel guitar players. I did a pretty good job on the gig. I think one of the main reasons why Skaggs hired me was because I was a pretty good dobro player and I could play a good deal of Jerry Douglas’s style. I sure do miss them days.

No need to discuss further. The inner sleeve of the album lists detailed credits for each song, Weldon is on this song.

Kind Regards, Walter

Ricky always had a great steel player, and Dean fits right in there. The Dobro was a highlight for me. Thanks Dean. I have a tough time picking out the differences between these excellent players and have to depend on the credits to guide me.
