I am having issues with a pick-up in a ZumSteel that I just purchased. I have heard good things about Telonic pick-ups. What is the best way to find out about these pick-ups in terms of their particular application for pedal steel etc. There is a website, but I would like to hear from fellow steel players about these pick-ups
and the best way to go about purchasing one.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Bradshaw

Bradshaw, I have a number of guitars and every one of them have Telonics pickups in them. On both E9th and C6th side. I'm using the X10 and even though they sound great at low volumes, I feel the most notable thing about them is that the harder you push them the better they sound. The sustain on this particular pickup is better than any other I've ever used. The biggest problem with pickups is, everyone hears different and what I like, you may not. I always find you really have to try a number of different pickups in a guitar until you find one that gives you what you're looking for. And nobody can tell you what that is. Irrespective of this however, I don't believe you would be disappointed at all with a Telonics pickup.

Call Dave Beaty at Telonics and he will surely recommend a pickup for your guitar and application.

Best,
Chris

Dave,

What do the X10’s run price wise? I’m curious about trying something different in one of my pushpulls. You can pm me if you care not to post.

Thanks!

While I don't know the price for the X series pickups, I had the X12 installed in my new (Ross Shafer) Sierra, and I absolutely love it.
Write Dave Beaty (he's on the Forum); you'll get a virtual tome of info, but you won't be left with any questions about pickups and related issues.
Dave has been great about answering me, and when I had to decide on which pickup I wanted in the Sierra, I was told that the X ones do NOT color the tone. At all. Whatever your steel sounds like, it will come through the X pickup, and that's exactly what I found.
The X12 is clean and clear, is not muddy, is not bright - it is absolutely worth what it may cost.
And if you're not crazy about how any string sounds, there are 2 sets of adjustable pole pieces to send you down that rabbit hole.
It also handles effects pedals superbly, something I can't say for the George L pickup in my Kline.

Bradshaw, I would like to know what the issues are with the stock pickup? What are you playing through? I have a Zum Stage One and it took me a bit to get my tone dialed in but now I think it's great. A little more information about your setup may help. The Telonics are great products and service it top notch. Just make sure that your issue is the pickup.

I have X10's in one of my Zum Hybrids and 409's in the other - either pickup will be outstanding once you have it setup.

I also have the X12 in one of my guitars and the 427 in the other guitar. Both great, but I lean toward the X12. It takes patience and time to dial in the pole pieces, but once you're there it's unbeatable.
