My Rickenbachers saved me!

Post by Andy Sandoval »

After having to selling my pedal steel because of nerve damage and arthritis problems I thought I'd never be able to play steel again and decided to take a break from posting on the Forum for awhile but I'm back and I owe it to these two. My medical issues are at a more tolerable stage now and I've been playin for about a week now with a big ole smile on my face. The silver hawaiian is a 38' tuned to B11 but I'm not sure of the age of the B7 panda tuned to C6 with an A on the bottom, any ideas on the year? Btw, I'm really glad to be back and hope to start posting again. This Forum rocks!

Glad to see you back posting Andy! Good luck dealing with the health issues.

When I was getting ready to move back to the Philippines I thought about selling my lap steel, but realized the day may come when a pedal steel is no longer an option. So instead of selling it, I kept it and added a dobro! I am mostly a pedal steel player currently, but try to practice the dobro and lap steel regularly too.
Pedal steel, lap steel, resonator, blues harp - why suck at just one instrument when you can do so on many?

Thanks guys, I hated seling my pedal steel and hung on to it for the longest time but there it sat not being played and that bothered me so it went to a good home where it would be played again. Btw Doug, I ordered one of your C6 song books to get me back on track again and your tune "moontide" really inspired me to get back in the saddle.

Glad you are back. Wondered what happened. I have had massive health issues..... still have my pedals, but frankly play mostly non pedal now. I like it better and less maintenance issues .......lol

That's a nice collection you have there Andy. Glad to hear you are able to enjoy making music with them! I find myself picking up my '37 Silver Hawaiian more often than sitting down to a pedal guitar these days. The simplicity of picking out a new melody and improvising on it is so enjoyable on a magical sounding Ricky!

Andy, I must confess that when I first read of your difficulties, I did not know how to respond. The idea of having our musical ability taken away, is too bleak to ponder for long. I wish you every possible improvement and chide myself for my petty complaints.

I'm a guitar player and luthier, but a fall 8 weeks ago left me with nerve damage in my left arm and hand that means I can't play. I'm trying to hold a slide and learn slide Dobro and lap steel. I like hearing about other people who are driving on through, dealing with things and getting it done. Gives me strength, so thanks for sharing. You done good.

Brian, arthritis in my hand got to where I couldn't fret my beautiful Gibson acoustic for more than a few minutes any more and so I had to let that one go too but I can still pick up my Fender Jaguar, the longer scale length with light gauge strings is lots easier to fret so I kept it. I'm gonna stick with lap steel and hope for the best and I wish you good luck with your dobro and steel guitar
