I just got a used Match Box, model 4A. I find that after a session or a gig -- three to four hours of playing, say - my volume pedal makes a terrible sound (like a dirty pot) unless I replace the Match Box batteries (or remove the Match Box from the chain).

Is this normal? How often do y'all change the Match Box batteries? Does anyone suggest modifying the Match Box to take an external power source? Are there other alternatives?

Thank you.

Yes, on the older Match Boxes you need to pull the output plug when not in use, that disconnects the battery. I modified my Match Box and installed a little switch to it like the model 7A so I don't have to pull the plug anymore.

I think a pot will sound a lot scratchier when there is a DC voltage across it. Apparently the Match Box does this as its batteries go down. I don't know what you can do about it besides replace the pot or lose the match box.

The batteries should last a very long time. Mine is the #6 model, it has two 9V batteries in it, and the batteries last for months.
