C6 TAB Lapsteel Last Date - Floyd Cramer

Post by Bert Farroach »

Hi lapsteelers !
For the first time we had 40 degrees celsius this week in the Netherlands !!
Nevertheless: a new tab ! :)
The well known hitsong by Floyd Cramer.

I can't play the "slipnotes" on the lap (advantage PSG),
but I tried to catch the specific harmonies mr. Cramer was so well known for.

My version on YouTube is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4wrVhm ... e=youtu.be

Want to give it a try? Just email me, and I'll send you the complete PDF and mp3 backing track. For free, as always.
Here's the first part, with best regards,
Bert

Song - Last Date

Post by Jerry Berger »

I contacted Bert regarding the above mentioned tabbed song and mp3 backing track. He responded in less than an hour. The tab is great and easy to follow and the mp3 backing track is excellent! Thanks Bert. :D

You have some terrific arrangements, Bert - I love your version of "Mad World". "Last Date" is a great old tune. Cramer got that slip note lick from the pedal steel, it's only that fair we reclaim it. I would use the classic Jerry Byrd 3-fret reverse slant to start. This gives you Cramer's lick as a G7 to C reverse slant to straight bar move. Then, personally, I'd get the iV chord lick out of the 5th fret F position. So this is how I would play the first two bars:

Thanks very much for paying attention, Andy ! :D
Your first suggestion is a new chord to me (and a spastic shoulder chord too :? ), which gives that country feel right away. And you're right about the second half, too schoolish probably.
I'm just a "triad-man", developping my ears and skill, all due to the 6th in this C6 tuning, haha.
And also trying to follow your fine posts in the Lapsteel Jazz group on Facebook !
Thanks again, we're doing our best,
Bert

And your best is excellent, Bert!

That V-I slant move is very pedal steel-like and works well in classic country but also in blues, Hawaiian and many other genres. I cribbed it 100% from the great Jerry Byrd.
