ShoBud Crossover Serial 8012, 6 x 1

Post by Gary Patterson »

I bought this about a year ago as a pile of parts, not quite complete. It had suffered tremendous cosmetic insult, including being covered in a "rosewood" contact paper, covering what proved to be a beautiful combination of birdseye maple and (I think) rosewood. Instead of attempting a "full resto" on this wood, I opted to clean it up, touch it up, and leave some patina and lacquer checking appropriate for its age (about 1973 vintage, I think).

Much of the undercarriage was already disassembled. I took the rest of it out, including the changers, and cleaned all the individual parts. The crossover mechanism was missing, but I acquired/made parts to restore it to full function. A fellow forumite was generously giving away a case, which I relined with velvet. (I'll look up his name and credit him).

What the heck can you do with this thing?
1. Play it. It works well, and sounds good. I don't really like the pedal spacing, however.
2. Do the complete resto. This wood is spectacular
3. Build your own LDG, and sell the leftovers. I recently read where one expert here on the forum regards these single/single changers as ShoBud's best sounding.

Would $1250 + shipping be about right? I'd make a reasonable drive from Nashville to exchange and avoid shipping.

Greetings to All! My first post here :-)
Hi Gary,
I'm pretty sure that the dark wood is solid 1" thick drop dead gorgeous Brazilian rosewood. Its now on endangered list and many consider it the finest tonewood for guitars. Nearly impossible to find for a new build these days.

Tom,

I can't be certain, but I also think it's Brazilian RW. Probably not much effect on tone when this massive, but it sure makes for a pretty combination with the birdseye. We won't see any new guitars with this wood.

Thanks for your comment.

.. oops sorry folks, my mistake. Gary and I were just talking in private conversation about the nice people in our government and shipping companies and how little we pay to bring stuff across the border :-)
