Multiple Genres

Post by Susan Alcorn »

Here is a video that I put together in 2016 for the (Baltimore-based) Baker Artist Award. It's basically a collage, snippets where I played in different musical contexts mostly fee jazz, free improv, classical, and hip hop.

Also included in the application were videos of various outlier musicians I have collaborated in the few years preceding the application:

Maryland visionary country singer Zane Campbell

(operatic) Singer songwriter Josephine Foster:

Somerset, Kentucky singer-songwriter (and gifted visual artist) Dan Dutton:

NYC-based songwriter Rose Thomas Bannister:

And, last but not least, the total outlier musician Jandek:

I hope you enjoy the music.

Relly liked the varying applications on these songs. I am a beginning steel player who has played guitar and bass in the past. I am especially interested in applying steel guitar to a genre that normally isn't represented in the steel guitar community. That being comtemporary christian. I am hearing "wonderful sounds" in my head from the steel when these songs are played.

I also like applying the steel guitar to other genres. Just have to get the mechanics down first and then let the fun begin!

Susan has done more to explore the musical universe via the pedal steel guitar than any person living or dead.
Her work is inspirational but a tough act to follow!

You neglected to mention collaborators Nels Cline at 3:48 in the collage, Mary Halvorson also. Good stuff.

While your taste is certainly different than mine I admire you for venturing out and taking steel to different music than what most of us play. You are no doubt a talented lady.
