If you are at all interested about old Fender, Gibson, Traynor, etc. etc. amps, you'll get a wealth of info from this podcast, The Truth about Vintage Amps with Skip Simmons.
The expert, Skip Simmons has been repairing amps for years with what I'd describe as a very practical approach. Tons of info without becoming a boring laundry list, he really knows his stuff. A friend of mine described him as having "just the right amount of curmudgeon!" He sounds like he's seen it all and now he's gonna give it to you straight, but all the while respectful of subjective opinions. "If it sounds good to you, then run it, brother!" he has said on multiple episodes.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, they do talk about amps for pedal steel every once in a while on this podcast. (1000% more than on other guitar related podcasts!)
Check it out, now 18 episodes in:

It's a great podcast. I've been listening since episode #1. He dispels a lot of the BS that's surrounded vintage amps since the 90s. _________________ GFI S-10 P U, Moyo Volume, Fender Steel King, Fender 5F4 Super-Amp |

Don't knock it 'till you try it, brother. You ever work on a farm? You use what you've got to get the job done.
I was in a jam. Needed my amp for a gig that night. It had no volume and sounded as distorted as a fuzz pedal. No deoxit available. Radio shack is out of business, now. I hand-applied, not sprayed, extremely light coat of WD-40 on all the pins of all the tubes. Then put the tubes in and pulled them out 3 or 4 times each. Amp worked perfectly after that.
Admittedly- I ordered a can of deoxit from the internet to clean the tubes and sockets properly later. I'm sure with the WD-40 in the tube sockets, it'll attract dust and cause problems if it isn't cleaned. But don't dismiss WD-40 out of hand. I got good results.
I sure was glad I got that tip from the podcast. That's what I'm talking about when I say "practical approach". _________________ '02 Carter S-12 uni
