Early Larkin Poe...

Post by Nic Neufeld »

I have y'all to blame/thank for introducing me to Larkin Poe, as a new (mostly non-pedal) steel guitar player. My family is really into it as a nice compromise between pop and the stuff I've always been into (classic rock, steel guitar). We saw them live in Salina this year (the 11 year old daughter was transfixed). Their later stuff is pretty heavily into the blues side of things, but from exploring their earlier stuff, we like a lot of their pop stuff too. The first Skin/Reskinned album, the collaboration album with Thom Hell, and the bluegrass with their precursor the Lovell Sisters. Once they formed the band they made 4 season-related EPs, and because Amazon has the one, I got the Winter EP and we like it a lot. Wondering if anyone knows how to get ahold of the others since they seem out of print.

Here's a nice track from the EP...the part that gets me, even though it is simple and subtle, is the outro after 2 1/2 minutes, with both the dobro and the Ricky bakelite.

Edited to the right video hah! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcMQKUndQVA

If anyone can point me to a not-highway-robbery version of their Spring/Summer/Fall EPs, would be much obliged!

. . and the intro goes all the way to the outro...
A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first.

I've been a big fan of Larkin Poe for quite a while.

The bass seems to be a bit busy on this particular tune you posted.

It almost sounds like a Seinfeld episode.

Sorry guys that's hilarious. I was confused by what you meant. Lemme fix that real quick LOL!

(Chris Squire is awesome though!)

I did end up finding the early stuff...if interested PM me and I can point you in the right direction.

A few highlights...this one has some funky stuff..."Burglary":

An almost Pink Floydian slow jam, "Fall from the Tree":

Anyway, worth seeking out, shame they let it go out of "print".
