Met up with Brett Resnick, Kacey Musgraves' steel player, recently before a concert. Kacey refers to him as "Smokin' Brett" and after seeing him up close on both necks of his 2 Zum D-10s, it's an apt description. He can bring it!
He's a great guy, friendly, knowledgeable and way into steel. The future of our instrument is in good hands.
My favorite is her cover of a song Willy wrote, Are You Sure. I’m sure you can find the story here on the forum, but the idea for the song came from an interaction with a somewhat drunken customer at Tootsie’s while he and Buddy were sharing a beer. Ray Price recorded it and Willie listed Buddy as coauthor which meant E received royalties as well. It’s a pretty cool story.
Her music has evolved over time but she still carries a steel.
I usually like my live music in smaller venues but ... seemed like hundreds of teenage girls and young women knew - and sang - the lyrics to almost every song! They did a nice downstage segment with just Brett’s steel, a banjo (!), doghouse bass and drum. A great show.
Brett plays for Kelsey Waldon also and has some absolutely killer playing on her newest album "I've got a way." She's got a new album out Oct 19, i think, and he's on that also.
If you guys haven't checked her out, you definitely should. Solid classic country sounds. Brett's instagram is chock full of great steel content. What a player.

Brett's a wonderful dude, even though he left Donelson for the bright lights of Madison, and a killer player/student of the instrument- one of the few younger dedicated palm blockers. Kacey Musgraves has a great band of players, but he really gets to open up and play with Kelsey Waldon- she's fantastic and definitely worth checking out- just signed to John Prine's record label-on a big tour at the moment with another great steeler Whit Wright.
