Hi everybody I read and introduced in Italian all your comments about the difference between 12 and 15, Paul Franklin said that he on the 1992 tour with Dire Straits had used two cabinets with two Peavey 12 speakers but never understood the exact model? That sound he had on that tour was scary, but then you see the various live shows with Brent Mason the players and you see Paul using two handcrafted 15 cabinets and I understand that they are closed cabinets behind and in the front they have 4 holes, those are 15 speakers but it is not clear what they can be, my question is why Paul made his 12 8ohm Eminence PF-350 speaker and now he did the 8ohm PF400, and everyone talks about 1501-4 as the best speaker for PSG? I have been following Paul for years and his sound with what instrumentation he is able to have and for me the most beautiful sound ever Paul always gets it when he uses the yellow and red Steel with double pick-up CHROMATO BL 705, PAUL for how I listen the most beautiful sound has it with that steel and the 15 speakers he uses with The Players that I mentioned before, it is not known that they are if peavey or that, and that series are seen as in the center cone the ball is black and not chrome like the 1501-4, will they be 15 to 8ohm? Given that his signature PF eminence is 8 ohm? It would be interesting to know why Pau with the yellow and red steel of the 90s every time he uses it has a different sound from all the other steel, who knows if it will be for use the double pick up or find mixing and solutions between the two pick ups and he found the speakers that he gets that sound that no steelere in the world has ever had. Greetings from the Italia Francesco
Hear in this video and if you follow the various videos of Paul when he uses that yellow and red steel he has a unique sound that he doesn't even get with his other personal steel, I wrote to him in private last year greeting him from a his dear Italian fan who has been following Paul since the 90's since the famous tour with Notthing Hill Billies and the DS On Every Street tour, I asked Paul if he got that sound because he had double pick up but he never answered me and I don't know if you have ever discussed this yellow and red steel here on the forum, how can it sound like that and yet it is always he who plays it his hands but it sounds different from all his other steel, you should all notice, those who follow Paul in many videos ....

I was at the Players show a week, maybe two after that first clip you posted, and talked with Paul about what he was using.
It was a Stereo Steel combo amp in that tweed rack that he was using for around town gigs back then, rather than hauling his Mesa Boogie/Mosvalve rack which weighs a lot. He also had a Lexicon m500 in the rack, and a red line6 pod that he brought out for the Players gig but not for the Timejumpers.
The cabs were made by Duane Marrs, and he said they had JBL's in them - though he could have meant JBL type speakers, which could have meant 1501's.
As much as I like messing around with equipment, and recalling obscure gear facts like this I think it's more important that you find something that sounds good to you and stick with it for a while. No matter what you end up using, you can get a lot of different sounds out of one setup. Being familiar and comfortable with what you're playing through is most important imo.
Here's another nice clip from around that time but with a different guitar. His first solo sounds like a perfect steel break to me!

Thank you very much Brett for your intervention very welcome and I thank you very much, I watched the JBL and the D130 or E130 from 15 both have the central chrome ball, in the cabinets of Paul that I make you notice are speackers all black, however when he use that yellow and red steel with double pick up has a unique sound in the world, have you ever asked him if he uses both pickups in the E9? |

Are you sure Paul is using 15’s ? I mean really sure.
I am in agreement with Brett. You seem to be obsessed with small details that might not have much meaning. If you are interested in how Paul has created his unique voice I would invest in his on line coarse and spend some real time with it. _________________ Bob |

Dear Bob, I'm not obsessed, as you all talk about Paul and other Steelere for years, I do it all, no obsession, we usually talk about technical aspects and sounds, nothing obsessive, also because every one of us lives his own life ...... Francesco |

Being obsessed with details is not all bad ! I’m sorry if I sounded harsh. You might want to look at Dan Tyack’s set up sometime. He uses 2 pickups and is friends with Paul.
Did Paul sell that dire straights 2 pickup steel? If you join Paul’s learning system you have access to his Facebook page. I heard he is very active there. _________________ Bob |

Bob never forget that detail will always make the difference in everything you do both in music and in so many things, I like the detail in anything I do, nobody wants to sound like Paul the only one in the world who has that sound and that touch, I play the Pedal steel thanks to him, that I've been listening to since 1990 with Notthing hill billies, that sound has transported me so much for so many years that I was involved in this world of PSG, I'm a great estimator and I like to read up on Paul's qualities but this does not mean that I am obsessed, for us in Italy the word obsessed is not a good word. Good evening Francesco |

I have seen Paul playing live at the St. Louis Scottys Steel Convention and the Texas Steel Jamboree several times over the years. His tone was always excellent. I can tell you that Paul is obsessed with his tone and while using different rigs at these shows, he still sounds fantastic. Not only that, he still sounds like Paul. |
