lately I've been unhappy with the conventional E9 tuning, my biggest concern is the range in which it sits.....a wound 36 guage is just not low enough, I was going to begin experimenting with some lower tunings. I'm going to start with using a few sets of C6 strings, maybe first try to work out a A9 tuning(same copedant as E9)...so, if anyone has anything to add.

If you lowered it to A9, your highest string would be C# (with a raise to D). I don't think that would be very good.

Think about C9. The highest string would be E, same as on a modern C6th neck. The lowest string G could easily be lowered to E on a pedal or lever to get the full range of a standard guitar when needed. I think it would be very playable, though perhaps a bit dark sounding for country music.

A lot of guys just remove the 9th string D from the E9th and add a low E.

Thanks for the suggestion B0B, no worry about catering to country playing. I'm just trying to get the thing to do what I want; lower range, unisons, etc.
