Mooney left the band and was eventually replaced by Robby. apparently there was some rift between them where Moon and Waylon didn't speak for over a decade. Robby helped reunite them. he tells that story and a bunch more in this fantastic interview held back in July at the CMHOF: https://livestream.com/accounts/11775488/events/8752490
Waylon died in 2002, Ralph in 2011.

Ok the "rift between moon and waylon" is not really known; but I know what happened as I recorded on a whole CD with James Burton one time and he told me the story; since he knew I lived 5 minutes from Ralph in Mansfield,Tx(in mid 90's)and was his friend.
James told me; Mooney was really having a hard time drinking issues and Waylon of course said to mooney: " Moon I love you; and you are my hero and brother and it would kill me to find you dead one morning"...so Waylon let him out of the band and of course it was not a comfortable thing for either one of them for years and years. And Bless Robby Turners heart for getting their hearts and spirits back together years later.
Yes Mooney; told me: "you watch; I'll out-live Waylon"...
and yes he did; but loved him so much; they both were a match made in heaven...and now they are picking again together there.
