How do you get your steel to get the 2nd string to tune to D/C#? Need a little help! Thanks Dave

What kind of guitar do you have? That's a pretty standard change nowadays. If it's not already there, you can add it if you have a pro guitar. You'll just need the hardware to do it.

If the hardware is already on your guitar, you probably just need to tune it at the changer end.

I think most folks drop the 2nd string a 1/2 and whole step with a half-stop in the middle.

As Gary has stated..

does your Steel have the 1/2 stop for the 2nd string ? I am pretty certain that all, if not just about all Pro Steels have a 1/2 stop of some sort on the 2nd string to accomplish this.

Now I would agree that some 1/2 stops are better than others and do have a more positive feel at the 1/2 stop.

If you are playing a D-10, sometimes a pull rod can be added to a string on the C6th neck to get the feel for the 1/2 stop.

Dave, I don't know if it's obvious from the posts here, but the starting point is to make sure your string lowers a whole step, from D# to C#. Then you find a way to make a "half stop" at the D note- usually with a tuneable "feel" adjustment.

Carter steels provide a whole extra finger that's not connected to any pull rods, but allows adjustment of the feel and timing by moving the chosen pulling hole.

Recent Emmons steels use a rather elaborate under-body mechanism with adjustable springs and collars to do the same thing.

Most builders simply use the same knee lever to pull the 9th string lower (D to C#), and adjust the 9th string pull to start at the point where the second string has lowered a half step, for the feelstop, the increased pressure of the 9th string starting to pull gives the "feel stop" of the half-way position on the second string. You may not have the lower D to C# on your guitar, but there's probably a pull you can put on the same knee lever with the second string that will work in the same way.
