Beautiful Marlen SD-10 SOLD donation sent

Post by Leo Grassl »

This guitar sounds wonderful sustains well and has very little cabinet drop. These Marlens are great playing guitars that have very positive action.
Emmons setup Es are on the left. 3 pedals 4 knees. This is an ALL PULL Marlen and is a factory SD-10 not a convert. The changer end, end plate does have a window milled out for the C6th but this guitar has never been a D-10. I would like to keep the guitar but I am partial to my Dekley right now and can't afford to have a steel sit around. Case is a little beat up but is perfectly functional and sturdy. Thanks for looking!

Dude...the Marlen all pull models are TOTALLY RIGHTEOUS GUITARS!!!

Best of luck brother with the sale. I’m an Emmons guy at heart, but I’d totally have one of these in my stable if it was feasible to do. Damn bills and responsibilities!! These will hold their own against guitars twice the price or more and this is probably the best deal on the forum that I’ve seen in a while.

Thanks Alan and Skeeter for the comments. Yes these guitars have a real Emmons like growl to them if you ask me. Someone will get a very fine guitar.

Nice steels...

These were ahead of their time, innovative changer, as good as any and a lot better then a lot of them. I play my all pull Marlen every day. Never once had an issue with it. Wish I had the room.

The sound of the D10 I played for a weekend has stuck in my mind for twenty years. They have a growl very reminiscent of a push pull.

Nice.
What is “very little cabinet drop”. Can you measure in cents?

Cabinet drop

Post by Leo Grassl »

John,

Here is the cabinet drop readings using the Peterson tuning app connected to the guitar using an irig2 (this is my preferred tuner live and in the studio)

Both Es tuned to 440 with A and B pedals down when released = between 2 and 2.3 cents sharp. When tuned to 440 with both pedals UP and THEN pressed down = between 2 and 2.3 cents flat
So the conclusion for cabinet drop on the Es is about 2.3 cents which IMO is excellent.

On the 6th string when the A pedal is pressed down it drops between 3.8 and 4 cents
IMO also very little for the 6th string

Johnny Cox once told me to never measure cabinet drop on the 6th string and to only consider it on the Es. I think his advice was solid but in my experience (at least how I tune personnally) having less cab drop on the 6th string makes for easier tuning.

Thanks for your question! I secretly love talking about the touchy topic of cabinet drop.

This Marlen is excellent on the cabinet drop. 2 cents on Es is a non issue.
