X10 Telonics pickup???
Your take on this pickup. Compared to a 409?

Larry, I like it better than the 409... I think the X10 is more open, cleaner and clearer, where-as the 409 to me was a tad on the heavy side.

I had a problem in some of my guitars having a thin tone on the treble side using single coil pickups. It was hard to EQ out so I talked with Dave Beaty and he recommended I try the X10. I was totally happy with the response from that pickup. So much that I've put it in three Push Pulls and a LeGrande and it sounds great in all of them. Even put it on the C6th side on two of my guitars with the same nice response. It's like the more you push the pickup the clearer the deeper the tone is.

I recently installed a X-12 on my 75 Universal MSA and it's as everyone stated above. Clear and punchy. I have the 12 string version 427 of the 409 on my other 76 U-12 MSA. The 427 has a little deeper response, but still a great pickup. I prefer the X-12 and have been getting a big thumbs up from the band members. The X models aren't listed on Telonics website. You have to call them.
1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Boss 59 Fender pedal for preamp, NDR-5 Atlantic Delay & Reverb, two Quilter 201 amps, 2- 12" Eminence EPS-12C speakers, ShoBud Pedal, 1949 Epiphone D-8. Revelation preamp into a Crown XLS 1002 power amp.

I just changed out an Alumitone with an X-12 on my Williams e9 extended. Sounds much better--clearer, richer, more full. Difference was night and day to me. Dave Beatty called shortly after the install to make sure it was dialed in properly for the guitar and then made sure my TCA 500C amp was set up correctly to match. Spent about 30-40 minutes talking with me and making suggestions. I have a back-up Williams that I intended to put an X-12 on in the near future.

I have the X-10's in my Red Burl Zum Hybrid and they are absolutely outstanding. I also have 409's in my Black Zum Hybrid and they seem to suit that guitar pretty well - as stated, a slight bit darker - but not by much.
I'm going to stick with both guitars the way they are for a while and decide which ones I prefer - but I must say I love the X-10's so far.
