Wanted: Ventura CA area pedal steel player

Post by Tim Donaghy »

Fairly new Ventura alt-country band seeking a pedal steel player to fill out the "country" part of alt-country.

We practice weekly just above midtown Ventura (typically Wednesday nights, 6:30 - 9) and play all original songs about drinkin, leavin town, lost love, life being weird, and driving around. Perhaps a few other things as well. Got a couple gigs lined up for the summer, not opposed to finding a few more.

Our current lineup includes - drums, Fender bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, piano. The ideal steel player would be able to add tasteful licks and play well with a piano.

We range in age from 30ish to 50ish. No drug or alcohol problems, though we do like to have a few beers and maybe smoke a little grass at practice. Nothing crazy, music is the focus.

Don't feel like dragging your steel to practice every time? You are more than welcome to use my 1965(ish) Domland Stereo D-10 (Emmons setup, 3 pedals/3 levers on the E9). I'm currently running it through a Fender PA 135 and a Peavy 12" speaker, which sounds great.

For sound, influences range all over, maybe Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt/early Wilco/Whiskeytown before Ryan Adams got creepy/Blue Mountain/Golden Smog/Old 97s/Uncle Tupelo/Neil Young/some Bakersfield... basically alt with country influence.

Here are a few rough videos from a recent practice:

If you're interested, feel free to message me here on the forum or at donaghyt@gmail.com. Of course, this is for fun (not paid) but any shows we get, we'll obviously split the proceeds or put it back into the band fund for recording.

Upcoming shows:
June 5th at the Maui Sugar Mill Saloon in Tarzana, CA
June 22nd at The Sandbox Coffeehouse in Ventura, CA

Hey Tim,

One of my student pedal steel guitarists has moved into your area.
He is becoming a good player.

Send me a PM message here and I'll put you in touch with him.
