David Phillips Pedal Steel with Metallica

Post by Joseph Carlson »

David Phillips lays down some really tasty pedal steel with Metallica in this stripped down acoustic concert.

David is the man. Before we became acquainted, I found out he played on one of my all-time favorites records: Tom Waits's 'Bone Machine'.

Very interesting.

The video is over an hour in length.
Are there any particular high points featuring the PSG?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your interest.
It was a treat to play the show with Metallica.
AJM - No soloing but I play on all but one song, we rehearsed a few hours the day before played the next day.
This concert has been released on vinyl, a double album.

David is most working steeler in the Bay Area, followed closely by Dave Zirbel. Both are excellent players with their own styles.

David Phillips and I played in an average C&W band together 40 years ago at a dive on Mission & 14th street in San Francisco.
Back then he was new to steel, but quite good though he didn't seem to know that back then. I was playing bass in that band. Always a real nice guy and a real gentleman too.
Haven't seen him in years, but exchanged a couple of pm's a few months ago.
Seeing that video was nice and glad to hear he's doing so well and working a lot of gigs.
One thing I'd like to know after seeing the video is how he forgot to get older looking like the rest of us?
Well david, I'm waiting for your eternal life secret? Ha ha ha....
Best wishes,
Andy :D

I remember that, Andy. I think the bar was called The Sound Track. David was playing a white MSA, 14 strings even back then. He's always been an awesome player.

I imagine Josh Yenne is as busy as those two. Another excellent player.

You have a better memory

Hi Bob,
You have a better memory than me. I'd forgotten the name of the place. The Sound Track is right.
There was a blond girl who sang in the band, but don't remember her name!
David was playing a white MSA 12 string then. I do remember that.
Was not a very good band we were in, but it was fun on weekends.
You and John Sala were playing the Castle Club on Gery street.

Back then he came to dinner a few times, but we kind of lost contact for a long time when I moved to Austin, TX until I saw a post he'd done on the forum, Great place to meet old and new friends.
