Just wandering what everyone uses for soundtracks to play along with. Band in a box, etc.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There are a ton of background tracks on YouTube.
Whatever song I want to play along with, I just go to the YouTube search box and type the song title, followed by one of the following (or similar) phrases:
Backup Track
Background Track
Play Along
Karaoke
Minus1
These are great fun for practicing/playing along with.
This one is how I learned Mr Sandman (the minus sign means it's a minor chord, so B- is Bminor, D-6 is Dminor6):

I like Band in a box. You can change the chord and
the tempo to suit your needs. You can also use the
chords or the number system. Helps you to learn the
numbers if you don't already know it.

What type of music is your passion? When I started, I played along with records that didn't generally have a steel guitar. That meant singers like Jim Reeves, Mary Ford, and Jimmy Dean for the country stuff. For rock and pop, I'd use singers like Brenda Lee, Perry Como, Patti Page, Roy Orbison, or Bobby Vinton. Since 90% of what I played was backup, I concentrated on that rather than just playing solo pieces. But after I got a good handle on playing, I found I could play any hit vocal as an instrumental.  |

| Thanks for the replies. I like all kinds of music but mainly old stuff for steel. Ray Price, Faron Young, etc. I think i will get the band in box just for the features you mention. Still new to steel, but i like the idea of learning back up first. Ive been playing banjo for 30 years and made the mistake of learning songs first. I could play any song, but get in a jam and play terrible back up. Of course I finally figured it out, but should have learned the other way around! Lol |
