I have an Emmons LeGrande III that is about 15 years old. The lever that drops 4&8 on the E9th tuning is giving me problems. I can engage the lever and it will not come back true as it always had. I can barely move it and the lever will return as it should. I have oiled it and that helped for a short time. Any ideas on what could be causing this issue and what would fix it? Any help would be certainly appreciated.

Look at e raise on pedal three and make sure it has a little play in linkage, sometimes if its tight it will prevent lowered e's from returning because it stops them before they get back all the way .

Sounds like you might just need to tighten the lower return spring(s) a little. Is this affecting both 4 & 8?

My LeGrande III did the same thing after returning perfectly to pitch for years. It is a 1997 so it’s a little bit older than yours. I lubed it with tri flow and that helped it just a little bit. Then I got underneath and noticed that the 4th string changer finger was rubbing just a little on the one next to it. I don’t remember but it was probability string 5. I moved the bell crank over just a little so it would pull straight and not at an angle to bind with the one next to it.
This might have helped just a little, but It still wasn’t returning all the way. Finally, I tightened the return spring 2-3 turns and problem solved.
If I remember correctly, since I couldn’t get to the screw head, I pulled the hooked end of the spring off, turned it a few times while holding the adjusting screw still, then hooked the spring back on. I haven’t had a problem since.
