Phone keypad problem

For several weeks now,when using messaging or messenger, my keypad won't work properly. If I type an a, I get an e, I can't type a k at all, and there are other letters that come up with a different letter than typed. Six months ago, I had the same problem but I accidentally stumbled on a keyboard selection menu that had two options. I selected the opposite item and it solved the problem The problem is, I don't know how I stumbled on this keyboard settings menu and can't find it again. It is a ZTE Android phone. Any suggestions.
