Changing strings, what other simple servicing ?

Post by Stuart Sawney »

Hi, I'm changing strings on my Marlen tomorrow after about 2 years ( I know, bad form !! ) What simple service can I do whilst strings are off ?? The steel is working fine and stays in tune well with no mechanical issues. Should I oil all moving parts, 3 in 1 oil ?? Any thing else I can do ?? Thanks in advance. Stuart

Check if there are grooves on the changer fingers, if there are, polish them.

A tiny amount of lubricant is probably okay. Though 3-in-1 is better than no oil, I still prefer a good gun oil (like Break-Free CLP, or Hoppe's), or sewing machine oil. Some prefer synthetics or silicone/teflon lubes, but the main idea is just to lube regularly (every year or two is fine) and sparingly.

This (or a needle/syringe) is my preferred type of applicator:

Same here, makes it very easy to put a small amount in just the right place. I use this lightweight oil originally bought for my model railroad engines ;-)
