TSGA Jamboree highlights!

Post by Tony Palmer »

Can’t believe I’m the first one to start a “review” but here goes...
Very well attended, capacity crowd Friday night. Needless to say, Sarah Jory and Paul Franklin were the big draw but Sarah totally stole the show with her passionate playing and heartfelt interaction with the audience.
Lots of Western swing played on and off stage (no surprise) but Billy Phelps did a straight ahead classic country set and Ronnie Miller and the Pridesmen absolutely killed it, especially when Charlie Pride’s son, Dion came on stage to sing a medley of his fathers hits.
Monster players were everywhere but for some reason the non pedal room was my favorite hangout. The real deal...playing without pedals and levers yet still getting everything from retro country sounds to straight ahead jazz and everything in between.
Nice dobro playing, frypan lapsteels, old consoles and 10 string C6 modified pedal less pedal steels!
Sierra S10 (three!), Peavey 112 and 115, Benoit dobro, Beard Model E dobro, Beard Roadophonic, MSA Superslide, Dean Nickless custom dobro

Fox & Friends

I seen the Air Force Band (Wild Blue Country) on the Fox network this morning, "Fox and Friends".
They had their own young steel player, playing a black Zum with the lightning bolt front. They didn't let him play much.

Update: I hadn’t seen the US Navy Band “Current Country and Bluegrass Ensemble” when I posted earlier....WOW they were great! Some of the very best country music ever ending with God Bless the USA.

Henry Johns their steel player was one of my students at ETSU. An awesome player and a good guy to match.

I saw the band in Medora, ND about three years ago. I was playing the season there and the US Navy band did a one-off performance one afternoon.

Looking at the Kennedy Center video I see that some personnel have changed since then. The steel player is different and so is the banjo-player - I can't swear to the rest but the front-man is the same.

I had fun meeting with them and hanging out. I must admit that, before their performance, I'd thought: 'How good can they be? It'll be a compromise'. Boy, was I wrong!

Their old banjo player was as good a player as I've ever heard and their set was immaculately presented.

The steel player (his name now escapes me) had a new MSA D-10 with a Milkman amp - all courtesy of Uncle Sam, he said!

The banjo/acoustic guitar player/harmony singer was different at TSGA than in the video. It looks like the rest are the same. We are always fortunate to see the best of the best at the TSGA Jamboree, but for me, the U.S. Navy Country Current Band was the ballroom's highlight performance of the year. Their set alone was worth the entire session admission price.

The Navy band was awesome. They put on a show second to none. All weekend was a fun time. Thanks to the entire TSGA for putting this show on.

Loved the Navy Band. Their steel player is 6ft 7 inches tall and a really nice young man as well as a fantastic picker.

The Army band, Air Force band, and Navy band have all bought Hilton pedals from me. Back during the Vietnam War draft I was drafted into the Marines. Heck, I might of stayed in the Marines if I could of played steel guitar in a Marine Band. Instead of me playing a steel guitar in the Marines, they needed me to pack a gun. I guess times have changed. I thought six foot six was the height limit to be in service. That may have also changed.

I was their both Friday and Saturday nights and it all was just AWESOME. I have been in love with Sara Jory since I saw her on her second trip to the states in St. Louis. She was just 15 but what and artist/entertainer she was then and today what can you say. I sat in the Mullen room for two hour plus Saturday afternoon while she jammed with some great pickers including a young 24 year old Harrison Yount who rumor has it he is going to work next month for George Strait? He is a super picker for a 24 year old. But so his Jason King who I think is only 15 years old. So their is a few young ones coming on to carry on our old traditional music, Austin Stewart being another one. All are good all American young men with good values. And yes, the US Navy Country Band was over the top. What showmen and show ladies, as good as it could ever get. And in their Dress Uniforms, what more could you ask for. Well, I did not ask for it but their lead vocalist came on the Paul Franklin set and stepped up to the mike and strummed a chord on his guitar and then hit the vocal of "Together Again" that put chills up my spine. What a great voice and with confidence and then Paul Franklin just put the icing on it. What a great performance it was. I was just amazed at all of the show. Albert and his people did and outstanding job for this years show. Keep up the good work Albert Talley. J.R. Rose

Such a great weekend to be at the show. Of course seeing Paul Franklin and Sarah Jory was a high priority. Jacob King, who is 15 years of age, played and sounded like a steel player with 25 years experience. We are not related but I wish we were. The MSA and Mullen rooms were packed all day long. Mike Sigler played in the GFI room and just drew a big crowd as well. Most people did not know it but Buddie Hrabal was in charge of a jam session on the back side of the restaurant. That was a lot of fun to be a part of. Last but not least, seeing and meeting people from Canada and from overseas is always a treat. Come on 2020, I am ready for another one.

What everybody else said. Jacob Kings Lost In The Feeling would have made Buttermilk John grin and Sarah Jory & Roy Rosetta’s Danny Boy would bring a tear to a glass eye.

All of the above is true. I really enjoyed visiting with young Jacob King. He is a joy and not just on the pedal steel. I first met Austin Stewart when he was 8 years old and both of these young fellows are just great people. The fact that they are great steel players is a bonus.

Really enjoyed the Navy Band and many others to name. Great performances one after the other.

Looks like I missed a great show. Haven't been there in about 4 years.
Does anyone have a picture or video clip of Sara Jorey? I absolutely love her version of "City Lights"!
I better make my reservation for next year soon!!!

So many great moments, Paul Franklin seminar, and both of his shows were fantastic.

Paul is the most generous, kind, and humble superstar you’re likely to meet. Just a really great guy.

The US navy band was a real treat. So great to see these young men and women represent our country . They really enjoyed it as well. A class act.

The MSA room was smokin... Mullen and GFI as well.

The non-pedal room was happening as usual.

Thank you TSGA, every year has been a blast.

Neil,
Here's a pic of Sara Jorey in the Mullen Room on Friday. I was lucky to be in the front row.

Here is the e-mail to send comments to the brass regarding the US Navy Band.

NavyBand.Comments@navy.mil

Please take the time to send a note.

According to Kenny Ray Horton this has a great influence in possibly booking them next year.

Also please refrain from saying anything negative about the Navy Bands Volume or Tempo on some things.... Or the fact they were the only act that had their own sound man and the only one that had any feedback at all. Tell me I'm not being honest! ;-).

My wife and I took Sarah and her Husband to Deep Ellum last night for dinner and they will be back next year come Hell or High Water. I took them to a tiny, cool place that has had Junior Brown on it's stage. Wouldn't you know it but Mark (Sarah's husband) is a 28 year veteran of a UK parish Highway Patrol. Junior's "Highway Patrol" has been their theme song for many, many, years. They play it while on Patrol. If you aren't familiar, then get yourself to YouTube immediately.

The mic on the Banjo is what fed back when they boosted the volume for her lead.
Fwiw, It only lasted about 2 seconds.
I jammed with the guitar player, Joe, and he was a great player and super nice guy.

shoulda had a pickup...

Post by David Hodan »

That banjo should have had a pickup.
Everything she did was of the highest order though. Whether you could hear it or not. Believe me I'm not complaining one bit. They were still they highlight of the show. Even with Sarah and Paul there.

The TSGA takes great pride in providing a high quality show. Particularly with the music. Any little glitch like that pains me...

I sent an email with high praise for Country Current and received a very nice reply thanking me for the comments, and assuring me that it was appreciated and will be shared with all of the musicians and upper brass. Please do the same to let them know how much you enjoyed them.
