I happened to look at the Carter want ads and saw someone looking for a 6 string PSG. I thought they all were 8 or more. I'm a lap player with little pedal knowledge but it seems pulling on 6 would be quite limited and defeat the whole purpose of pedals. What's the story?

When Cougar Guitars were in buisness they made a 6 string pedal steel. Only one I saw in person was at elderly Instruments in Lansing Mi.There was one recently on ebay in the last few weeks. I wish I could find one, but I imagine they are rare. |

What style music would it be used for? Maybe a 6 string player using it for jazz, or blues maybe. It would be interesting to hear.

The Fulawka is not a pedal steel guitar, it is a pedaled versions of a Spanish guitar. It is played by fretting the strings with the fingers, like a regular guitar, with the addition of pedal pulls.
It is to a standard guitar what the pecal steel is to the non pedal steel guitar
Blackie Taylor has a double neck instrument with a U-12 (Custom made for him by GFI) steel guitar on the front neck, and one of these on the back.

I'm expecting a new six string 4+4 from Lone Star within the next few days. It's a skeleton model. It's currently in transit from Texas.

One of these days, I predict you'll see a pedal steel player with 6 strings and a few pedals who will flat amaze you! It's only going to be a matter of time.
Some young kid will come along and sound like a cross between Jerry Byrd, Phil Baugh, and Joaquin Murphy! We get so hung up with dozens of strings and pedals, we lose sight of what a real talent could do with only 6 strings. |

I agree with you also Donny.
Some talented kid who"doesn't know any better"is going to come flying out of nowhere with a "screw tradition" attitude and some home brewed setup.
Check out the kid who won the Guitar Center Shoot Out this year. Slung the guitar down on his knees and did some beat-box routine.
The old guard went into a tailspin.
Yahoo!!! Ain't we got fun..[This message was edited by Mark Vinbury on 09 December 2005 at 01:22 AM.] |

FYI, the Fulawka 6 string IS a steel guitar, and not fretted, as Mr. Perlowin suggests. I've played this instrument. |

I have started a thread on Six String Pedal Steel under Steel Players and it features the Leavitt Tuning.
I have only been experimenting a few weeks and the possibilities are amazing. The guitar is a Carter with just six strings on the back neck and a new pedal/knee set up which is still under construction. Here is a sample of the sound: http://members.cox.net/loveridehd2/WordsOnLeavitt.mp3 |
