If you remember back...about 4 months ago, I tried to get a video of clips of guys saying Hi, and playing a few licks for us all to share.
Well, some people asked to not be on it after they got upset with something said by someone on the Forum. Then 9-11, and I've been just trying to stay afloat. So it's not going to happen.
Some guy emails me today, mad as ___ at me, saying I should have told everyone and why wasn't he informed. REALLY RUDE, came back - has everyone been told- YES OR NO!
Man this kind of stuff is getting me down.
So anyway- officially - the video is off and anyone who wants his tape back, send me a email - hopefully with a bit more kindness in it.
Man, I am just going back to the hills.

That someone was me.
I went to the effort to borrow a video camera
spent 3 days off and on preparing a 15 minute demonstration on my 10 string non pedal acoustic together with 4 solos. I sent it December 6th.,2001.
I expected the courtesy of an acknowledgement which was not forthcoming.
I also felt if the project was cancelled we all deserved the courtesy of an advice and/or the offer to get our video back for individual exchange if we so desired.
That was not forthcoming.
I just counted 6 emails back and forth berween Ted and I to-day.
I was upset but not rude. If that was my intent I would have used caps.
Anyway I am glad Ted came to the Forum. Now we all know officially.
I'm truly sorry Ted it had to come to this
but fair is fair.
As far as I am concerned it's over and I wish you the best. I know you are a busy man and working hard at making a living.
Good Luck. I mean it!

Thank you Roy, and if I misread your tone on the email, I truly apologize.
Wish the project had been a much happier one.
Ted
PS. Roys video was very interesting with a unique instrument he built himself as a Dobro steel guitar, hard to explain, but ask him for the video, it was very interesting and good.
Also - every video I got was good and fun, and some interesting set ups and players out there - I do wish everyone could have seen them and you guys that were involved, you're cool![This message was edited by Ted Smith on 17 January 2002 at 06:16 PM.] |

Ted, I work in television. If you want to send me all the tapes (and if the folks who shot them agree) I'll edit them into a single video and make dubs at no cost other than mailing expenses to send out the finished product. I'm pretty busy so it won't be fast but I'll be happy to help this project see the light of day. |

I was one who got discouraged awhile back by some hurtful emails and "pulled out" of the video project.
But since then, I have had many nice exchanges with folks here and I would like to show my support... so if it's a "go" I'll put together another tape and send it to Andy directly.

Jeff, I'm willing to take on Ted's home grown project only right now. The idea of a DVD of old steel clips is a great idea but it's a much more complicted and daunting task than our homegrown project. Even though much of the footage in question is old, it still has OWNERS in most cases and there are copyright and licensing issues involved. Furthermore, the source materials are on many differnt formats ... 35, 16, and perhaps even 8mm film as well as video. To do it right, they'd need to be professionally transfered, digitized, and corrected for contrast, saturation, audio, etc. - not just projected and shot off the screen. The whole thing would then need to be edited and dubbed. Then there is the cost of mastering, dubs, and mailing. I just finished a 6 minute DVD project that cost upwards of $30k and would have cost close to $100k if we hadn't negotiated a flat rate. Even cutting at home by someone on systems like i-Movie or Final Cut Pro would involve a ton of work and those pesky copyright issues which really can't be ignored. So ... in my opinion, the best thing to do would be to lobby someone like Stephan Grossman at Vestapol Video who ALREADY has a mechanism in place to do this kind of program. He's released many wonderful compliation videos of old clips. (Check out his Merele Travis video with Speedy).
As for the other project, those involved (or anyone who wants to jump in) let give Ted the green light to send me your tape or contact me via email for shipping instructioins. I think this is all a great idea. I am an academic historian--US History specializing in California and the West--and it would be great to have this material preserved. (Go Andy!) If this phase of the project can be put together there is a possibility of searching then for grant monies to take a project like this to the next step. Also, if any of the distinguished steel guitar players living on the West Coast would be willing to donate some time, I would be very interested in sitting down with them to talk and record some oral histories to be archived by the University of California. This would take a little time, but well worth the effort.
Cheers |

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jody, but yikes - this a TALL order. We're talking two separate projects here. I suppose I'd be willing to work on both but here's what would have to happen:
Project #1 Non-Pedal Forum Video:
1. Everyone who sent Ted a tape needs to send him an e-mail giving permission to send your tape to me. New participants can send directly to me (e-mail me for shiping info)
2. I'll edit all the material together - making editorial decisions in the process - and get VHS dubs done. A DVD version is possible but would cost extra. I'll donate my time and the VHS tape stock but folks would have to pick-up mailing costs or costs for dubbing to DVD. Okay. That's project #1.
Project #2 Archival Video/DVD of Steel Guitar performances:
Here's what would need to happen for this to get off the ground.
1) Everyone who has access to footage in whatever form ... Video, film, digital media... would need to get it transfered to Beta SP or DVCam format. Further, you'd need to do a reasonable search for a copyright owner and document this on paper. This means you can't include a great Jerry Byrd show you taped off the air from Hawaii PBS, for example. Yes, some forumites sell some cool compliation videos but these are technically illegal as they violate copyright law.
2) You'd then need to send me the Beta/DVCam clips and I'd edit them together. If we were really ambitous, we'd try to get interviews w/ pro players giving commentary.
3) The final product could go to Beta or DVD.
4) There would be costs associated with this one for transfers, dubs, etc. Here again, I'd donate my time but I can't pick up any of the costs. So if people are serious,
e-mail me offline to follow-up.

I agree that Andy should not get strapped by this. My point was that if Andy got together even the impromtu video that Ted suggested I might be able to use it to sell an academic project to a number of granting bodies that may be willing to provide funds for persuing this further. Steel guitar is a great topic--it is something that originated in the US (or territories), and is a musical form that is included in many different genres of music.(Hawaiian, Western Swing, CW, Sacred Steel, bluegrass, East Indian, etc.) What is more American for instance than the story of the Dopyera Brothers (immigrants) and their designing of the Dobro? As for myself I will start to put in place a long-term plan for interviewing anyone willing to participate. (Have had a couple of interested folks e-mail) This will be info gathered for purely historical purposes and archived by myself and the UC. That way if others want to persue the topic they as well will have open access to it in the future. If Andy is too busy, no problem on my end. I'll do some interviews and try to expand the project from that approach. Mind you I teach at two different Cal State Universities, and am finishing my PhD at present--have 5-6 months to go--so I see this as a project that I will work on over a 4-5 year period. Also, I am 40 and have a life other than teaching, so I understand that Andy, as an accomplished professional is very busy. If Andy can do it, great. If not, no sweat. Maybe we can reopen the discussion in the future when I have a grant check in hand. |

Jody & Roy, you guys are gems - I appreciate your friendship & concern.
Let's consider the edit of Ted's project as good to go (send those tapes, when you can, Ted).
Del, let's talk off line and explore how this could happen down the road. I've long thought that the story of steel guitar is ripe for a PBS program as it covers the entire spectrum of American music.[This message was edited by Andy Volk on 20 January 2002 at 10:55 AM.] |
