I just bought myself a christmas project and it turns out it belonged to a forum member Alvin Sydnor who I PM'd to see if there's a back story- If it's the white one he talked about painting in a 2007 post it's probably gone thru a world of hurt as it made its way to El Cajon, CA and now to Sacramento.

I think I may be running the steel version of an animal sanctuary - I also have a Gibson Grande Console that had been cut up to ADD pedals. Not. Pretty. Thoughts on letting it live out its life as really cool lap steel?

Merry X-Mas from the Island of Misfit Toys!

.
The only reason I am saying this is because I play lap steel.
I would clean it up, get it working and have one heck of a double neck lap steel.
But.......that's just me.... Smile

Ya, that's where I am heading with it.One of my favorite songs is called "Thousand Dollar Car" (which would've been a luxury when I was 16) and I always remember this line:

A thousand dollar car ain't gonna roll
'Til you throw at least another thousand in the hole
Sink your money in it, and there you are
The owner of a two thousand dollar thousand dollar car

Perhaps it's a "Bound Stringmaster"?

This model does not have the roller nut. I'd leave it alone and make (keep) it as non-Pedal.

Thank you, Jack. That's exactly what I was looking for - a reason to just play it/enjoy it as-is. But me being me means I'll eventually give in to my compulsion to strip it & dip it, design a boo-wah switch and hide my own secret note under the tuners for someone to find in 2059 - when it's 100 and I'm either dead or comfortably numb.

Cheers!

Refinishing it won't hurt it. It actually looks like it needs it.

Put it back to the original blond finish.

Do you have the cables and pedals? If not, you could at least make two or three knee levers. That would be easy to do and very cool.

Unfortunately no pedals..appears to have been purposely re-purposed. Will definitely refinish it - I believe it was white/blonde. I'll take the alum/mag down to a buffed metal finish and add a cross piece across the front legs because I like that look...good ad space!

Here's a pic of the Gibson Grande that was operated on..ouch!

The poor Console Grande looks like it is in pain from the "modifications" So sad to see that....

Just like a old car, at some point, a pedal guitar's just not worth fixing. It's too big, too heavy, and too bulky to be anything but a pedal steel, and there are plenty of multi-neck steels already out there for $200-$500. Therefore, I'd see that Fender 1000 only as about $600-$750 worth of parts. IMHO, there's no way it's worth all the effort to make a console out of it, one that might wind up being worth less than the value of the parts that are in it.

I'm kind of thinking of it like those funky fiberglass dune buggies; totally impractical, some people hate em but often half the fun is customizing them (if that's your thing)! Thanks for the input!
