Bobby Seymour would sometimes do away With the nut rollers on his pedal steel for a little better sound he would use a very small dap of grafite on what ever round metal stock he choose to use. An GFI Keyless steels are made the same way. I like too use brass.
I know it help sound I bought the shirt. |

Franklin's do not use separate gauges for the rollers.
I asked Paul Sr, why and he went back to his Sho-Bud days and said Sho-Bud was using gauged rollers but having problems with string rattle. He experimented with different gauges for the rollers and came up with one that didn't cause the problem and worked on all strings on the Sho-Bud's. Thus when he designed and started building his Franklin steel's he used the same approach and didn't use separate gauged rollers. |

My keyless design doesn't have a nut at all (see pic). The strings fit direct to the tuner fingers which are like miniature changer fingers. So simple I don't know why others don't do the same.
