SoCal Shout-Out

Post by Donald Mohr »

Hello everyone,
I'm new here, but I live east of LA, not quite to Riverside.

I've been reading and I see a lot of people from california here. Are there meetups/conventions I don't know about out here?

I just moved here from Texas.

We don’t really have any conventions or jams out here these days. We used to have a jam every now & then, but not any more. Usually we end up congregating at Jim Palenscar’s shop in Oceanside, and that’s usually on a whenever, informal type of thing, and we bascially just make a day out of it. If you haven’t been down there yet, you should go…
I’ll drop you a line next time we all go down there
Jay Dee and I play fairly regularly in Burbank, lately on Tuesday nights, but that might be a schlep for you.

That's almost in Phoenix. So you should drive over to the SWSGA show January 17,18,19

Ok, let me restate.

Y'all want to jam at my place, then?

Burbank on Tuesdays might work for me to come out. Please send me the details.

Steven, we play at the Burbank VFW every now & then on Tuesday nights...next one is on 12/11.
It's isn't a jam, we play with Cody Bryant there...Jay Dee on steel & myself on keys.
Just your basic Tuesday night gig...you're welcome to swing by & say hi. It's a fun gig musically, and it's always a treat to hear Jay Dee in that setting.

Donald, it's well worth your time to get to Burbank to hear some inspiring playing by Jay Dee.

Skip is right about the "club meetings" at Jim Palenscar's Oceanside store, that's a groovy hang.

Blackie Taylor is a player/teacher with a small steel store right there in Riverside. Not quite the fun hang with a bunch of LA's best players like Jim's place, but Blackie is a legend in SoCal. He was my first teacher in the mid-70s. Jim's, too.

Also, do get to Phoenix for their January show, ton of fun and great playing, good seminars, too.

Steven Paris, did you ever finish cobbling together that Emmons???

Hey there, Professor McTwang!! I don't know about 'cobbling', but I did have Clem Schmitz add three knee levers and set her up; then I replaced the wobbly non-adjustable legs with a full set of (heavy) pro legs from a '66 Emmons; and I am about to add a 'Black Rock' type neck courtesy of my good friend and mentor Jack Hanson. My little brown GS-10 sounds fantastic to my ears!! I am still struggling along, trying to learn how to play and making slow progress. I am really looking forward to hearing JayDee play at the VFW next week---he's my favorite player!
