The Feral Swing Katz (Australia)

Post by David Rogerson »

The Feral Swing Katz are world class (in my opinion) & base in Sydney, Australia.
This clip is just a sample of their work.

That is some good stuff! I remember seeing Michel and the band at the ISGC several years ago. The crowd was wowed by this band. Thanks for posting this clip.

Also, check out The Spin Drifters, Australia's answer to The Time Jumpers. Some members of the Feral Swing Katz are also members of this band. The show starts at about ten minutes into the video.

Yes I agree about the players, You might also mention "Stuie French" He is rated as one of the best guitar players in Auzzie Land. I have been following his group and Michel Rose for a number of
years. Stuie and his song bird wife "Camille" also have many CD's, Stuie and Michel are first call players when artists are shopping for players on their CD's. Stuie also has his own studio where many tracks have been recorded.

I spoke to Camille a while ago as I was trying to Connect with them when they were not touring. She mentioned that Michel had moved out of Sydney so that might effect the "The Feral Katz" and the Spin Drifters. I did see a different steel player with the Drifters on their last show in the Basement Club.
However Michel may have been busy with a session.

The "other" steeler with the Spin Drifters is Tomi Grasso, a very fine player.

Yes I have seen Tomi before but this was someone other than Michel or Tomi. However just an observation, as Camille mentioned Michel had moved from Sydney.

Hi Larry yes Michel and his wife have moved up to the Gold Coast near Brisbane - they do still however, play Feral Katz gigs!! It's probably not quite so much as when they were all living in Sydney ... Michel is very much busier with sessions and gigs in the Gold Coast/Brisbane area than he was in Sydney so he is pleased about that :-}

He's a great mate of mine and stunning player and bloke !!

The other player you saw with the Spin Drifters on a Sydney show was none other than Lucky Oceans...

Hi Paddy,

Nice to hear that Michel is doing great, I don't know Michel personally although we emailed back and forth a couple of times. Camille mentioned that on one of the "Country Cruises" they were coming up the West coast of Canada. I said they should jump ship and play a couple of shows in Calgary. I have not heard any two musician's ( Michel and Stuie) play so well together on their licks. I was hoping to catch up with their shows in Tamworth but accommodations was a problem not to mention the "Heat"

I see that you have a 72 Chet Atkins Nashville, I have a 1966 (6120) Gretsch Chet Atkins Nasville...great guitar but I like my Mullen SD10 better.

hehe Larry good spotting re the 6120 Chet .... yes I bought it new in Hawaii in 73 when I was still in the NZ Navy - I was there doing the Rimpac exercises ... so that guitar has been with me since then - 45 years, it's a double cutaway Orange job with the gold plated hardware, just love that guitar but don't play a lot of 6 string these days due to my full calendar as a pedal steel player :-} ! I upgraded the original Bigsby to a gold plated "chet arm" too.... it also has the padded back ! I did my very first studio session with this guitar in the late 70's - my steel playing wasn't up to it at that point hehe...

Great looking guitar Paddy, Mine being a bit older had a mute bar between the bridge and bridge pickup,
The headstock had the horseshoe logo on it below the Gretsch name.

Hopefully I will be in your area someday to hear you and Michel play live.
